THEY GO CRUISING AROUND L.A. one final time, the Kid riding in the bed of the Camino with the dogs, his stomach boiling, his head burning, everything reminding him of Tilly, but also of Ken Goodman: past a billboard for Smokey and the Bandit from which Sally Field—who looks like Tilly—smiles at him from Burt Reynold’s arms (who doesn’t look like Ken but has the same s**t-eating grin); past a billboard for CBS’s One Day At a Time from which Valerie Bertinelli—who also looks like Tilly—smiles out at him while standing next to Snyder the Janitor (who also doesn’t look like Ken but who’s banging Valerie Bertinelli in real life, he bets); past Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Vista with its rollercoasters and bleeding volcano.
