I WAS SITTING CURLED up on the floor between the two rows of seats. I was trembling all over, thinking of the things Novak had just told me. They were supposed to bring me comfort, knowing I was safe. I had the keys to his car and a stash of money. I hadn’t checked it, but I knew without asking that it wasn’t just a little bit of money. I could be out of here without even glancing back. I could be whoever I wanted. Wherever.
