WHEN I GOT TO MY APARTMENT, I had to shake off the feeling that something was different. It was probably just my imagination or maybe it was just some weird tick that came from being pregnant—god knew I’d picked up a few of those—so I ignored whatever intuition was trying to tell me. I went to unlock my door, but started when I found it was open. It creaked open slowly and I froze, watching and waiting for it to reveal something terrible, something awful.
