*Chapter 3: The Tic-ing Time Bomb (or, My Body's a Puppet Show Gone Wrong)

384 Words
Just when Alex thought his brain couldn't get any weirder, the Tic-ing Time Bomb decided to join the party. Imagine a bunch of invisible puppet masters with a severe case of the giggles, yanking on Alex's limbs and making him do all sorts of bizarre things. One minute, his eye was doing the tango, blinking like a disco ball with a short circuit. The next, he was making snorting noises like a piglet trying to learn the trumpet. It was as if his body were a malfunctioning robot, and he didn't have the remote. The worst part? The more he tried to suppress it, the more those puppet masters went wild. It was like trying to hold back a sneeze during a silent meditation retreat – eventually, it was going to explode, and everyone was going to stare.Alex felt like a walking, talking, twitching disaster zone. He wasn't trying to be annoying; he just couldn't help it. One afternoon, he found himself in Mrs. Smith's office, expecting a lecture that would rival a Shakespearean tragedy. But Mrs. Smith just smiled, a smile that said, "I've seen it all, kid." "Alex," she said, "I know you're not trying to be a human tornado." Alex mumbled, "It's my brain. It's like a circus, but the clowns are all on roller skates and the elephants are doing ballet." Mrs. Smith nodded, as if this were a perfectly normal analogy. "I get it. Your brain is wired differently. You have OCD, ADHD, and tics. It's not your fault, and it doesn't make you a freak show." She explained that his brain was like a radio tuned to a bunch of different stations at once, and sometimes the static was louder than the music. She talked about strategies, like fidget toys to keep his hands busy and a quiet corner to escape the Bouncy Castle's tantrums. Mrs. Smith and the other teachers became like ringmasters, helping Alex manage his circus of a brain. During quiet reading time, Alex's shoulder decided to do its best impression of a chicken wing doing the Macarena. Then, a snort that sounded suspiciously like a walrus with hiccups escaped his lips. The whole class turned to look, their eyes wide with a mix of confusion and amusement. Alex wanted to disappear into the floor.
