The rain had begun to fall in earnest, tapping against the café window like a rhythmic whisper. Nadira focused on the pattern of the droplets, trying to steady the storm within her.
Across from her, Arga shifted slightly, his fingers tracing the rim of his untouched coffee cup. He looked at her the way someone might look at a painting they once loved but had been forced to walk away from.
“I didn’t expect to see you here,” he finally said, his voice softer than she remembered.
Nadira let out a small, breathy laugh. “Neither did I.”
Silence stretched between them, thick with the weight of unspoken words. So much time had passed, yet this moment felt eerily familiar—two people sitting across from each other, trapped between what was and what could have been.
Arga sighed and leaned back. “How have you been?”
Nadira considered lying, telling him she was fine, that life had moved on effortlessly. But something about the way he was looking at her made her pause.
“I’ve been... figuring things out,” she admitted. “You?”
He nodded slowly. “Same.”
Another pause. Another unspoken thought hanging between them.
“Why did you leave?” The question left her lips before she could stop it.
Arga’s fingers tensed around his cup. He exhaled, his gaze dropping to the table as if the answer was etched into the wood.
“I thought it was the right thing to do,” he murmured. “For both of us.”
Nadira’s heart clenched. *For both of us?* As if he had done her a favor by walking away. As if she hadn’t spent months trying to understand why the person she loved had disappeared without warning.
“You never gave me a choice,” she said, her voice laced with quiet hurt.
Arga looked up then, his expression conflicted. “I know.”
She shook her head, letting out a bitter chuckle. “Do you?”
Arga opened his mouth as if to say something, but the words never came. Instead, he reached for his coffee, took a sip, and let the silence settle between them once more.
Outside, the rain continued to fall, blurring the city lights beyond the window.
Maybe some things were never meant to be clear.
