They didn't speak until they were safely back in Griffin's dorm, the stolen box hidden in a drawer beneath his bed. "That was someone following us," Faye said, still breathless. "You heard it." Griffin nodded. "We got out just in time." Faye pulled the velvet box from the drawer again and stared at the ring. The Roman numeral VI seemed to shimmer in the low light. "This ring," she said slowly, "it belonged to one of them." Griffin leaned against the desk, arms folded. "My guess? The Sixth Bell Society gives them to members-probably as some kind of oath or symbol. Legacy families. Wealth. Secrets." "Fayth must've taken it from someone," Faye whispered. "That's why they silenced her." Griffin hesitated. "We need to be careful. If they find out we have it..." Faye looked up. "Then they'll come after me, too." The silence that followed said everything. Griffin added, "There's more. One of the notebooks had an old name written inside. Beatrix Vexley." Faye froze. "Ms. Vexley?" He nodded. "She was part of it once. Maybe still is." Faye's thoughts spiraled. A teacher involved. A student murdered. A secret society hiding in plain sight. She had no idea how deep it went.
