The air in the grand hall was no longer cold with hatred; it was thick with the scent of pine, blood, and the raw, terrified musk of a pack under siege. The Shadow Claw Clan's howl had split the night, a sound meant to paralyze, but it had done the opposite: it had focused Alexander.
"Guards to the perimeter!" Alexander roared, abandoning his throne. His eyes, seconds ago blazing gold with fury at Lyra, were now molten iron, fixed on the encroaching danger. "Protect the Omegas! Find the source of the breach!"
Lyra watched him, her silver gaze detached. The scent of her own adrenaline mixed strangely with his commanding presence. Her singular purpose—revenge—was momentarily shelved, not out of loyalty, but out of necessity. She needed the Moonlit Clan intact to destroy it herself; the Shadow Claws were unwelcome competition.
"They used the ancient northern passage," Lyra stated, her voice cutting through the panic. She stepped forward, pointing towards the shadowy, rarely-used back entrance of the hall. "A passage only known to the highest ranking, or those who were banished to starve within twenty feet of it."
Alexander stopped dead. He turned, the shift in his attention brutal and absolute. His wolf pressed dangerously close, his body heat radiating through her coat. "How do you know that?"
"Seven years in exile teaches you the routes the Alpha forgets," she spat, meeting his glare with ice. "They are inside the perimeter. You are wasting time sending guards to the walls."
He seized her arm, his grip hard enough to bruise, yet the touch sent a violent, unwelcome tremor of recognition through her core. The phantom mate bond flared—need, anger, desire—a cocktail so potent it nearly broke her cold resolve.
"If you are lying," Alexander murmured, his lips close to her ear, "I will ensure your death is slow, Lyra. But if you speak the truth, you will lead the Vanguard."
"Lead? With you?" She laughed, a short, bitter sound. "I came back to bury you, not fight by your side."
"A sentiment I share," Alexander agreed, pulling her roughly towards the back corridor, forcing her pace to match his savage stride. "But the Shadow Claws won't wait for us to settle our petty domestic issues. You have the sight; I have the command. We are stronger together, for now."
Lyra fought his grip, but years of isolation hadn't dulled the sheer, overwhelming power of the Alpha King. She was pulled along, their proximity a violation and an ignition all at once. Every nerve ending screamed, remembering the warmth, the possession, the fierce love that had turned into this brutal co-existence.
The hallway was dimly lit by flickering torches. They hadn't taken ten steps when a hulking, scarred black wolf rounded the corner, its massive teeth bared, its eyes fixed on the female.
Alexander didn't hesitate. He thrust Lyra behind him, his body becoming an instant shield. He didn't shift, choosing to face the attacker in his human form, a terrifying display of controlled rage. "Get back," he commanded Lyra, his voice low, primal, laced with a protectiveness he clearly couldn't suppress, even for his rejected mate.
But Lyra wasn't waiting for permission. She bypassed him.
"Stay down, Alexander," she hissed. "I've waited seven years for a fight. This one is mine."
