The torchlight quarrelled with darkness as James pushed open the heavy iron door. Faint sulfur stench curled in the air, heavy enough to cling to lungs. Faye slipped a hand into his as they entered. The chamber beyond was carved from stone, lit by sconces that sputtered like wounded beasts. Shadows writhed between towering pillars and along etched walls.
Above them, vaulted arches faded into threatening blackness. Every breath tasted of damp stone and stale air. Their footsteps echoed unnervingly. They were blind shadows crossing sacred terrain.
At the centre stood a raised dais: the control panel for the Library’s magical barrier, guarded by three silent soldiers. Their armor gleamed—but not with welcome. James tightened Faye’s finge
