chapter 2: The masked intruder

1032 Words
"Who the hell are you?" Jake growled, his stance hardening, his hands instinctively moving towards his pockets. Emma's heart hammered in her chest. Panic clawed at her, a venomous viper coiled within. The tiny box she had covered and buried inside her, opened and her anxiety peaked. Did he finally discovered where she's been hiding after all these years? "Jake," a voice, surprisingly gentle, broke the tense silence. It was a voice she recognised from photographs. Jake's best friend, Paul. Paul stepped into the room, the mask falling to reveal a face etched with concern. Behind him, a small hand reached out, clutching a worn teddy bear. A tiny, blonde-haired girl, not much older than five, with wide, innocent eyes, peeked from behind Paul's leg. "Paul?" Jake's voice dropped to a near-whisper. "Millie?" An anxious Emma, deflated in relief when she saw the flu dressed hockey player with the tiny girl. "Jake, I... I have Millie." Paul's words came out in a rush, a mixture of apologies and explanations. "She wanted to see you." The girl, Millie, her eyes shining, reached out a small hand towards Jake, who recoiled back with a start. Her outstretched hand stopped halfway with a soft sigh. The shock of it all froze the entire room. The moment was shattered by Millie's small voice, "Daddy?" Emma's heart went out to the little girl, she was genuinely scared. Paul was genuinely concerned. She understood that the moment was too important to be ignored. "I know this is all very sudden and unexpected," Paul continued, "but Elena left her at the VIP box after the games...and now we need to talk about custody." "What do you mean Elena left Millie by herself?" Jake's voice was sharp, laced with concern. "Paul, what are you doing here?" A gasp escaped Emma’s lips. She'd been so focused on Jake, on the unfolding drama, that she hadn't noticed the small girl's presence. Now she was looking at Jake's daughter, the young girl's fear made her heart ache. She suddenly felt a surge of empathy. "I… I messed up, Jake. I told Elena that you were at back here and..." Paul trailed off, his gaze darting towards Millie, whose small hand still hovered in mid-air. "I'm sorry," Paul mumbled, turning his attention to Emma. "You must have been startled." Emma, though taken aback, managed to stammer a response, "It's...it's alright." She tried to compose herself, to hide the tremor in her hands. "Millie, sweetheart, are you okay?" Millie’s small gaze shifted to Jake. "Daddy!" she whispered. The entire room seemed to hold its breath. Jake moved towards Millie, his expression softening, his eyes filled with a love that transcended any words. "There you are, sweetheart. What are you doing here with Uncle Paul?" Paul spoke up, "She wanted to see you, Jake." "Yes daddy, momma said I could wait behind for you at the box," Millie parroted. "You looked awesome out there dad." A bright smile graced Jake's face at the compliment from his daughter. "You think so?" He teased. "Yes daddy," the little girl reiterated. "You were so fast and moving so quickly." "I'm sure Millie only has eyes for her dad, she didn't watch her godfather," Paul teased. "Yes I did," Millie quipped. "You were awesome too Uncle Paul." "Well, thank God for small miracles," Paul replied dramatically Leaning down, Jake kissed his daughter, "I'm glad you came," Jake said, pulling Millie close. "I'm really glad you came." Paul looked at Emma then back to Jake, he could sense the tension in the air, "come on Millie, we'll wait for your daddy outside," he said, stretching his hand to Millie who reluctantly let go of Jake's hand and followed Paul out. But Emma's mind raced. All the accusations, all the simmering tension, seemed to fade into the background, replaced by a surge of pity for the little girl and her father. She knew that Jake's needs and motivations were not what they seemed. What he was hiding about himself, about his relationship with Millie and Paul was far more complex than she first imagined. She still wasn't sure of her first gut impression of his motivations. Emma's gaze met Jake's. In his eyes, she saw a flicker of desperation, a vulnerability she hadn't noticed before. The layers of his persona, all the carefully constructed walls of his personality were crumbling, revealing a different facet. She was intrigued. "Paul, I'm glad you came," Jake said, offering a strained smile to his friend. "But, this situation is urgent." "I understand." Paul shut the door behind him and Millie, although Jake could hear him asking Millie if she wanted some ice cream. "Jake, what's going on here?" Emma asked, her voice devoid of judgment. "Millie needs a stable home. A place where she can grow without fear. I need a wife, someone to show the court that I’m committed," he began, shoving his havd through his sandpaper blind hair. "Someone to help me fight for custody." Emma's mind raced. It was a perfect cover. Perfect way to get into a woman's good graces. "And you think I'm the perfect solution?" Emma asked, a hint of suspicion in her voice. "I’m not sure," Jake replied, "but I want to know what you think." Emma looked at him. She knew the answer. "You didn't tell me the whole truth about Millie, did you?" Emma asked, her eyes glinting with a flicker of understanding. Jake's shoulders slumped. "No," he admitted, his voice strained. "Then tell me everything. The truth. The whole truth. And if you want me to help you, I want the full picture. Otherwise, I'm out." Emma's words were like a sharp blade, cutting through the air. Her decision was a calculated risk and he knew it. She would be a formidable ally, but her help came at a steep price. She would need to see the true character of the man. Jake looked at her, a strange mix of fear and desperation swirling in his eyes. He was trapped. He knew he had to do this. His daughter's life depended on it. He was going to have to reveal everything. "Millie's got cancer," Jake announced.
