Chapter 4

1372 Words
While driving on the road. I kept asking myself how things got this bad. As I finally approached Mia’s house, I felt relieved, hoping maybe I wasn’t completely alone in this any more tonight. I stopped at the front of her gate, gripping my bag tightly as I stepped out of the car. My legs felt weak, but I forced myself forward. I opened the gate slowly and walked toward the mansion door, my heart pounding. Mia was one of the richest girls I knew, and her house always felt too big for comfort. Her brother, Dan Parker, the well-known CEO, was rarely around, but his presence could still be felt everywhere. Right now, none of that matters. I just needed my best friend more than anything. As I reached the door, I knocked softly at first, then harder when there was no response. After a moment, the door finally opened, and Dan stood there, looking surprised. “Hey Elena, what brings you here? You came to see me, right?” he joked lightly, unaware of my state. “Dan, please, not now,” I said, my voice breaking slightly. “Can I come in?” He paused for a second, noticing the tears in my eyes and the way I clutched my bag. Without another word, he stepped aside, letting me in quietly, his expression turning serious almost immediately. Before I could say anything else, Mia appeared from inside the house. The moment she saw me, her face changed instantly. “Elena?” she called, rushing toward me. I couldn’t hold it in anymore. I broke down completely, crying as she pulled me into a tight, comforting hug. “What’s wrong? Elena, what happened?” Mia asked, her voice filled with concern. She gently pulled back, holding my shoulders and looking into my eyes. “Come, let me take your bag. We’ll go to my room. You can tell me everything there, okay?” she said softly, guiding me upstairs. Dan watched us quietly. Without saying much, he picked up his keys and headed out, clearly upset. Inside his car, he made a call. “I need information on Elena. Find out what made her cry tonight,” he said seriously. In Mia’s room, she sat me down carefully on her bed, sitting close beside me. “You can tell me what happened now,” she said gently, handing me a tissue. I wiped my tears, trying to steady my breathing, but my hands were still shaking badly as I prepared to speak. “I… I don’t even know where to start,” I said, my voice trembling. “When I got home…” I paused, swallowing hard as fresh tears formed. “I saw them, Mia. My mom and Dave… together.” The words felt heavy, painful, almost impossible to say out loud to her. Mia froze for a moment, her eyes widening in shock. “What?” she whispered, clearly trying to process what I had just said. “Elena… are you serious?” I nodded slowly, unable to speak again. The room felt silent as the weight of the truth settled heavily between both of us. “This is bad… really bad,” Mia said, standing up and pacing slightly. She ran her hand through her hair, clearly disturbed. “So your mom was the woman?” she asked carefully. I nodded again, my eyes dropping. Saying it once was already painful enough, but hearing it repeated made it worse. Mia stopped pacing and came back to sit beside me again. She held my hand tightly this time, her grip reassuring. “You’re not alone, Elena. I’m here, okay? We’ll figure this out together. I promise you, they won’t get away with hurting you like this. Not at all,” she said firmly. I looked at her, my eyes still filled with tears, but for the first time, I felt something else - support. Maybe even strength. Everything inside me was broken, but having Mia there reminded me I didn’t have to face this alone. And slowly, I began to believe that I could survive this. Mia stood up suddenly, her expression changing from shock to determination. “This isn’t something we ignore, Elena,” she said firmly. “They betrayed you in the worst way possible.” I watched her, unsure of what to feel. Part of me wanted to hide, but another part wanted answers immediately. “I don’t even know what to do,” I admitted quietly, my voice barely steady. “Everything feels broken.” Mia sighed softly and sat beside me again. “Then we take it one step at a time,” she replied. “You don’t have to figure everything out tonight. Just breathe and stay here safely.” Downstairs, the sound of a car starting echoed faintly. Dan had already left, but something about his reaction earlier lingered in my mind. He didn’t look confused, he looked angry. I wondered what he was thinking, or what he planned to do after seeing me in that broken state. Mia handed me a glass of water, watching closely as I took a small sip. “You need to calm down first,” she said gently. “Then we’ll decide what happens next.” I nodded slowly, trying to follow her advice, though my thoughts kept drifting back to that painful scene over and over again. “What if they don’t even care?” I asked suddenly, my voice shaking again. “What if to them, this is nothing?” Mia’s eyes hardened slightly. “Then that says everything about who they are, not you,” she replied. “You deserve better than lies, Elena, and you always have.” Then Mia made the call to her friend Mike, a well-known media person who never missed a chance to expose secrets. “Hey Mike, I need your help. It’s high time some people know what it feels like to mess with my best friend,” she said, her voice calm but dangerous. There was a short pause before Mike responded from the other end. “Mia, you know I don’t get involved in things without details,” he said. Mia smirked slightly, glancing at me. “Trust me, this one is worth it. I’ll send everything you need. Just be ready to move fast.” I watched her quietly, unsure of what I was feeling anymore. Everything was happening so quickly. “Mia… are we really doing this?” I asked softly. She turned to me immediately, her expression serious. “They didn’t think about you when they betrayed you. Why should we think about them now?” she replied firmly. My heart pounded as her words sank in. She wasn’t wrong. Still, fear lingered deep inside me. “What if this backfires?” I whispered. Mia shook her head slowly. “Then we face it together. But one thing I know for sure is they won’t walk away from this like nothing happened,” she said confidently. Her phone buzzed again, and she checked it quickly before smiling. “That was fast,” she muttered. “Mike is already asking for proof.” She looked at me again. “Do you have anything? Messages, pictures, anything at all?” she asked. I hesitated, then slowly nodded, remembering everything I had seen. “Good,” Mia said, her tone firm again. “Then this is just the beginning.” She sat beside me, opening her phone as she prepared everything. I leaned back slightly, my heart still heavy, but something new was rising within me. Not just pain anymore, but strength and revenge. I leaned back slightly, staring at the ceiling as exhaustion started creeping in. My body felt drained from crying and thinking. “I just want this pain to stop,” I whispered. Mia squeezed my hand gently. “It will,” she said softly. “Not immediately, but it will eventually.” Then I started falling asleep, I allowed my eyes to close slowly. The pain was still there, but it wasn’t consuming me completely anymore. With Mia beside me, I felt safe returning, that was enough to keep going.
