I knew I was playing with fire, bringing up this topic, bringing up anything related to Mr. Lancaster is a touchy subject for her. It had been for a couple of weeks now. Her boyfriend had cheated on her with his father's secretary, and it was all over the news.
Mathew Lancaster was famous for his cheating scandals, It came as a shock that she publicly settled for someone with his reputation when she could have easily been with someone so much better than him she is very beautiful and intelligent did I forget to add the part where her father is one of the wealthiest people in the city. She went for the devil's son.
There were a few well not so few rumors that his dad cheated on his mother with most of his secretaries but the PR team did a hell of a good job at covering it up you didn't have to tell me twice to believe the rumors were all true I saw it first hand and couldn't get the visuals out of my head. I knew very well that wouldn't be the case for me. All the previous secretaries were built like models and nothing similar to me.
"He did what?" Mckenzie yelled at the top of her voice her anger was visible from the red-hot shed her face had become. "I'm calling Daddy right now. We're not going to let that old grump get away with that. No, we're not." her grip on the steering wheel tightened even more.
"Slow down! At this rate, we won't be alive to see you get revenge on my behalf, not that I'm going to let you do it." She dramatically rolled her eyes and huffed in defeat. She knew I was serious about not letting her do it. I appreciated the fact that my friends cared about me and my well-being, but all their solutions were either too expensive for me to bear the consequences or too intense for the situation.
"How do you think Xavier will feel knowing the job he got you is one where your boss is bullying you?" If I let her help me handle this mess I got into, I would lose my job immediately, and that's not a good look for me. Unless I had information to sell to the journalism firm downtown.
" He will not find out about anything because we're not telling anyone anything. I pushed him.....that's why he reacted the way he did, okay?" I pause for a while thinking of the best way to phrase it for her to drop the whole thing "If I had been back to the office on time this would not have happened, at least he didn't fire me" I let out a small to reassure her I was fine I understand she is not on good terms with the Lancasters but I don't get why she is overreacting.
"How are you going to explain the staying at home part because they're going to notice, and when they do, it will be more embarrassing to explain because you should have told them in the first place"
She paused for a second almost like she was trying to get something off her chest " Now that we're talking about the office, I know you hate it when I give guys your number without asking you first but Josh is so into you he couldn't stop asking about you. Please don't be mad and text him back please"
"No, he isn't, I mean he did seem cool and was staring quiet noticeably but you're being a bit-" I turned to look at her she remained silent and stiff as she held her phone in my direction, the only movement she made was wink at me with a bright smile, I was fluttered that a nice-looking guy like him thought I was cute but was still questioning whether to be happy or sad about it considering the weird encounter after lunch was over.
"Now tell me what was it you were going to say again? the guy was totally drooling over you it was so plain he was not even trying to musk it " she replied with a casual shrug "It's so adorable how you give the best relationship advice but can't notice that a guy likes you" I couldn't stop myself from blushing.
The rest of the drive home was filled with playful laughter and loud giggles as she caught me up on the latest office gossip and weekend plans. we had decided to sing along to the songs we were obsessed with in the first semester of university the passing scenery outside provided a serene backdrop to our bad signing if anyone else listened to our signing we'd be arrested immediately that's just how bad our signing was. Before we knew it, the two-hour drive to our shared apartment had come to an end and we were parked in one of the empty slots in the car park, Xavier and Mckenzie's cars were already parked there was another car that I didn't recognize.
We rarely had friends over it was on countable occasions when someone other than ourselves was in our personal space during our breaks we spent time at one of the vacation houses that overlooked the beach or with our families for the holidays, judging from how Mckenzies face lit up when she saw the parked car it was someone she knew too.
"were we expecting someone today?"
"Ummh maybe, maybe not"
Joan was on the porch eagerly waiting to walk us in the fact that everyone was in a bright mood was so suspicious. Was I the only one whose day pretty much sucked to the core?
