Viktor
“So were you able to get a nanny for Annika?” Alexei asks and I only nod, taking slow sips from my drink. Getting Milana as Annuka’s nanny was unplanned and it was done on short notice. Something happened to her old nanny. She tried to hurt my daughter and I killed her. In the most gruesome ways ever.
“I hope this one stays. Changing her nannies all the time is not healthy. She's still so little to experience many toxic things.” Exactly. I'm so busy but I try to spend at least two hours with Annika every day. Sometimes I don't spend time with her at all but she never complains and plays on her own.
I know that it's hurting her inside that she is alone most of the time but she smiles to cover it. That's why I took her to a school where no one could know of her identity as my daughter. I want her to live a normal life and make friends normally. She will not make friends as the daughter of Viktor Ivanov, nor will her friends be scared of her because of her father's reputation.
She has had four nannies till she turned six. Milana is the fifth. I seriously don't like that woman, but Annika does and amongst all the nannies I've been getting her, she likes Milana more. The ones in the past had to force Annika to get comfortable with them, but Milana did not.
And out of the past nannies, only one made it out alive. One of them had the guts to give my daughter her nude pictures to get my attention, just so I could f**k her. Seriously??? Even if I f**k all the women in the world, I will never even think of f*****g my daughter’s nanny. That's against my rule.
I sent her out the next day. She's the only one who made it out alive actually. Others crimes were so extreme. “I hope so,” I utter softly, the loud music from the speakers in the club barring in my ears.
“And I think you should settle down soon. You're 32. Maybe Annika needs a mother, not a nanny.”
“She's fine with her father.” I say dryly. “She does not need a mother and I will not give her a reason to miss her mother either.” I state in a stern tone.
“You know since her mother—”
“Let's not go there, please.” I abruptly cut him short and he only nods before lighting his cigar. I take a look at my watch and I groan. I should get going already. It's already late. Boris already called to tell me that Milana had arrived.
I really hope that she exceeds my expectations because I still feel that she's not fit for the job. She's even married. I've done a background check on her and she's just….average. There's really nothing special about her or even her husband. They are just average citizens.
“I should get going. It's late. I promised Annika that I would come back early.” I tell Alexei as I rise to my feet. He gives me a reassuring nod. Annika can decide to stay up just to wait for me and I don't like that. That's why I try my best to come home early.
On my way out, I bump into Mikhail who holds a wide grin on his face. “Why are you leaving so soon? Alexei told me that you already found a nanny. So stay for a while longer. I've got two beautiful women arranged for you.” I sigh. Mikhail is the owner of this club, one of the biggest in the whole of Moscow. And he's also a member of the Bratva. He's a part of the four reapers, Alexei inclusive.
“I’m not in the mood to f**k!” I tell him. “And who told you that I got a new nanny? Alexei?” I could have called Alexei a big mouth, but he's mostly quiet. So what prompted him to say and to Mikhail of all people?
“Yes.” he nods, grinning at me. “I’m leaving, Volkov. Is Rostov here?” I ask after Nikolai Rostov, our last member and Mikhail shakes his head.
“You know he barely comes here.” True. Nikolai is too busy, especially now that he came back after his father’s death.
“See you.” I wave at Mikhail before walking out of the crowded club. I get into my car and I drive straight home. When I get home, the first person I meet is Boris.
“Where is Annika?” I ask pulling off my coat. She must have insisted on waiting for me. She always does that.
“Sleeping.” He reports and I pause. “Sleeping?” I ask in an unsure voice and Boria nods. I try my best to come early, and if I don't, I return to meet her watching the TV in the sitting room or from her iPad. She barely sleeps without me at home.
“I was quite surprised too. She wanted to wait for you as usual. But Milana managed to convince her and Miss Annika went to bed early.” He tells me and I swear, I'm stunned.
Her former nannies cannot force her to sleep when I'm not home except that it's in the afternoon. They can't and they have never, but Milana just did that on her first day here.
“Annika likes Milana a lot. And Milana seems very okay. They are getting along so well and I'm beginning to feel she will last more than the others.”
“We never can tell.” I wave Boris off. It can all be just an act. “Keep your eyes on her. Good night.” I head straight upstairs, but I don't go to my room. I go to my daughter's room. Just when I am about to reach the door, I see a shadow hiding behind the pillar and I pause. The person seems to be making a call and crying.
“Mom, I already told you how hard things are. I'm still trying to put some things in place and I just started this new job. I'll send some money over once I gather enough. But please, can you just stop? I can't suffer in his hands and then you. I need some breathing space.” She sobs while sniffling and my brows furrow. Who's ‘he’ that she's talking about?
