The Moment Everything Changes.

For a long moment, neither of them moved. Mira could feel Ethan’s breath brushing lightly against her face. The space between them had disappeared completely. One small movement—just one—and their lips would touch. Her heart was pounding so loudly she was sure he could hear it. “You should move,” she whispered. “You should,” Ethan replied quietly. But neither of them stepped back. Mira swallowed. “This is a bad idea.” “Probably,” he said. Yet he still didn’t move. His eyes stayed on hers, searching, like he was trying to understand something about her that she hadn’t even figured out herself. “You're going to regret this,” she said. Ethan tilted his head slightly. “Regret what?” “This,” she whispered. Then something inside Mira snapped. Maybe it was the jealousy from earlier. Maybe it was the months of tension between them. Or maybe it was the simple fact that she was tired of pretending she didn’t feel anything. Before she could overthink it, she grabbed the front of his jacket and pulled him forward. Their lips collided. For a second, Ethan froze. Not because he didn’t want it. But because he hadn’t expected her to make the first move. Then he kissed her back. And suddenly the world felt like it had completely disappeared. The street. The café. The people walking past. None of it mattered. All Mira could focus on was the warmth of his hands as they slid to her waist and the way the kiss deepened before she even realized what was happening. Her heart raced faster. This was dangerous. Too dangerous. And that realization hit her all at once. Mira suddenly pulled away. Both of them stood there breathing heavily. Ethan blinked, clearly stunned. “Well,” he said slowly. “That happened.” Mira pressed her hand to her forehead. “That shouldn't have happened.” Ethan raised an eyebrow. “You started it.” “That’s not the point.” “Pretty sure it is.” She groaned. “This is a mistake.” Ethan looked amused now. “You didn’t look like you thought it was a mistake thirty seconds ago.” “That was thirty seconds ago.” “And what changed?” Mira didn’t answer. Because the truth was… nothing had changed. If anything, everything had become more complicated. Ethan stepped closer again, though not as close as before. “So what now?” he asked. “Nothing.” “Nothing?” “Yes.” “We just pretend that didn’t happen?” “Yes.” Ethan stared at her like she had just suggested something ridiculous. “That might be the worst plan you’ve ever had.” “It’s the only plan.” “Why?” “Because this,” she gestured between them, “always ends badly.” Ethan’s expression changed slightly. “You don’t know that.” “Yes I do.” “How?” “Because people like us don’t work.” That line hit harder than she expected. Ethan’s jaw tightened. “People like us?” “You know exactly what I mean.” “No,” he said quietly. “I really don’t.” Before Mira could answer— A voice suddenly called from behind them. “Ethan?” Both of them turned. Chloe was standing across the street. She looked confused. And slightly hurt. Her eyes flicked between them, clearly noticing how close they were standing. “How long have you been there?” Ethan asked carefully. Chloe hesitated. “Long enough.” Mira felt her stomach drop. The situation had suddenly become much worse. Chloe looked at Ethan again. “You said she was just your roommate.” Ethan opened his mouth— But Mira spoke first. “Yeah,” she said quickly. “That’s all we are.” The words left her mouth before she could stop them. Ethan turned to look at her. Something in his expression shifted. Something cold. Something disappointed. And suddenly Mira realized that maybe the real mistake hadn’t been the kiss. Maybe the real mistake… Was pretending it meant nothing.
