Chapter 12: When Hunger Wakes

1380 Words
Mystic Falls was no longer breathing normally. It existed. That was the only way to describe it. Like a body still standing long after the soul had left. The streets were quieter than usual, conversations shorter, laughter forced. Even the sunlight that filtered through the trees felt weaker… like something unseen had dulled its warmth. And beneath it all Something was feeding. Deep within the woods Far from the town, far from prying eyes— A figure stood alone. Still. Unmoving. Watching the darkness shift around him like it belonged there. Enzo hadn’t fed in years. Not like that. Not recklessly. Not without control. But tonight Something inside him was… wrong. His fingers twitched at his sides, his jaw tightening as a low, unfamiliar hunger clawed at his throat. It burned. Worse than anything he remembered. “You feel it, don’t you?” The voice slid through the air like smoke. Enzo didn’t turn. “You again,” he muttered dryly. Cade stepped out from the shadows, calm as ever, like he had always been there. “I never left,” Cade replied. Enzo exhaled slowly, forcing a smirk. “Let me guess… you’re here to give a speech about darkness and destiny?” Cade tilted his head slightly. “No,” he said. “I’m here to remind you who you are.” Enzo’s smile faded just a fraction. “I know exactly who I am.” Cade stepped closer. “No,” he said softly. “You know who you’ve been pretending to be.” Silence. The wind didn’t move. Even the trees seemed to lean in. Enzo’s eyes darkened slightly. “Get to the point.” Cade’s gaze flickered toward him, sharp and knowing. “You’ve been starving yourself,” he said. “Denying your nature. Playing the role of something… softer.” Enzo scoffed lightly. “And you think that’s a bad thing?” “I think it’s a lie.” The words landed heavier than expected. Enzo’s jaw tightened. “I survived centuries without losing myself,” he snapped. “I don’t need you to tell me how to exist.” Cade smiled faintly. “And yet,” he said, “your body disagrees.” The hunger surged. Violent. Unforgiving. Enzo staggered slightly, his hand pressing against his chest as his breath hitched. Something was wrong. This wasn’t normal thirst. This was… forced. Amplified. Engineered. “What did you do?” Enzo growled. Cade didn’t answer immediately. He simply watched him struggle. Watched the control crack. Watched the monster stir. Then A scream. Faint. Human. Close. Enzo’s head snapped toward the sound instantly. His pupils dilated. His veins darkened beneath his skin. The scent hit him. Blood. Fresh. Warm. Alive. Cade stepped back slowly, giving him space. “Go on,” he murmured. Enzo clenched his fists. “No.” But his body moved anyway. One step. Then another. Faster. Closer. The scream grew louder. Panic filled the air. And then— He saw her. A girl. Young. Terrified. Trying to run. Too slow. “No…” Enzo whispered, shaking his head, trying to stop himself. But the hunger It was louder. Stronger. Drowning everything else. Cade’s voice echoed behind him. “You were never meant to be gentle.” And just like that Enzo snapped. The forest went silent. Again. But this time It wasn’t waiting. It was hiding. Back in town Candice sat by her window, her fingers wrapped tightly around the broken daylight ring. She hadn’t moved in hours. Her mind was too loud. Her heart… louder. Something had changed. She could feel it. Kai. He was back. Not fully. Not completely. But close. So close it hurt. Then The air shifted. Cold. Heavy. Wrong. Candice froze. Her breath caught as she slowly turned. And there Standing in the corner of her room— Was him. Cade. She shot to her feet instantly, fear slamming into her chest. “How did you” “Get in?” Cade finished calmly. He glanced around the room, unimpressed. “You invited me,” he added. Candice’s heart pounded. “I didn’t” “You opened the door,” he said simply. “That’s enough.” Silence stretched between them. Heavy. Uncomfortable. Dangerous. Candice swallowed hard. “Where is Kai?” Cade smiled faintly. “Alive,” he said. Relief flickered Then disappeared just as quickly. “But not safe.” Candice’s voice trembled. “What do you want from us?” Cade’s expression didn’t change. “From you?” he repeated. He stepped closer. Slowly. Deliberately. Candice fought the urge to step back. “I want nothing,” he said. Then his voice dropped. “But I will take everything.” Her breath caught. “What does that mean?” Cade’s eyes darkened slightly. “It means,” he said, “your love story ends here.” The words hit harder than anything else. “No,” Candice whispered. Cade tilted his head. “You think this is about choice?” he asked softly. “About feelings? About fate?” He stepped closer again, his presence suffocating now. “This is about balance,” he said. “You disrupted it.” Candice’s hands trembled. “I brought him back because I love him.” Cade’s smile widened slightly. “And that,” he said, “is exactly why I’ll take him from you.” Her chest tightened painfully. “You can’t.” “I already have,” he replied. A beat of silence. Then Her phone rang. The sound shattered the tension. Candice blinked, startled, her eyes flickering toward the screen. Unknown number. Her heart raced as she picked it up slowly. “Hello?” “Candice?!” The voice hit her like a memory she wasn’t ready for. Familiar. Warm. Alive. Her breath caught. “…Isabella?” A bright laugh came through the line. “I knew it! You still have the same number!” Candice’s chest tightened instantly. Isabella Jean. Her best friend. Her childhood. The only person who had ever truly understood her. “What are you doing?” Candice asked quickly, panic rising. “Why are you calling me?” “I’m coming to see you!” Isabella said excitedly. “I’m literally on my way to Mystic Falls right now.” Candice froze. “No,” she said immediately. Silence on the other end. “What?” “You can’t come here,” Candice said, her voice shaking now. “Isabella, listen to me you need to turn back.” A pause. Then a soft laugh. “You sound crazy right now,” Isabella teased lightly. “Relax, I just miss you. It’s been years.” Candice’s grip tightened around the phone. “You don’t understand,” she whispered. “I will when I get there,” Isabella replied. “I’m already in the Uber anyway. Too late to cancel.” Candice’s heart dropped. “Isabella” “I’ll see you soon,” she said warmly. Then The call ended. Candice stood there, frozen. Fear creeping up her spine. Slow. Cold. Unforgiving. Behind her Cade smiled. Soft. Satisfied. “You see?” he said quietly. “It always begins with one more soul.” Candice turned sharply. “Stay away from her.” Cade didn’t move. “I don’t have to go to her,” he replied. His eyes gleamed faintly. “She’s already coming to me.” Far away On a quiet road leading into Mystic Falls A car moved steadily through the night. Inside, Isabella leaned back in her seat, scrolling through her phone, completely unaware of the shift in the air around her. The driver said nothing. Too quiet. Too still. Then The car stopped. Abruptly. Isabella frowned slightly, looking up. “Um… why did we stop?” No answer. The engine turned off. Silence. The driver slowly stepped out of the car. The door creaked shut. Isabella’s heart began to race. “Hello?” Still nothing. Then A shadow moved outside her window. Tall. Unclear. Watching. Her breath hitched. “Is someone there?” The back door opened. Slowly. A figure stood there. Hidden in darkness. Face unseen. Presence… wrong. And then A voice. Low. Cold. Hungry. “Food has come.” To be continued…
