The Blood Curse

811 Words
The storm had quieted by dawn, leaving the town washed in silver light. Puddles mirrored the bruised clouds, and the scent of wet earth lingered in the air. Kai stood at the edge of the woods behind Candice’s house, his soaked shirt clinging to his skin, his jaw tight with fury and regret. Enzo had gone too far. He could still feel it the residue of compulsion in the air, the faint psychic echo of Enzo forcing his way into her mind. It was invasive, cruel, unforgivable. And yet… it wasn’t the first time Enzo had done something like this. A blur of wind and shadow, and Kai was gone reappearing in the ruins of the old Salvatore church. The roof was broken, and moonlight streamed through the cracks, silver on stone. Enzo stood inside, leaning casually against a pillar, as if he had been expecting him. “You took your time,” Enzo said without looking up. “I was beginning to think the great Kai had lost his temper entirely.” Kai’s voice was cold. “You went into her mind.” “I showed her the truth,” Enzo corrected smoothly. “Something you’ve been too much of a coward to do.” Kai’s eyes darkened, flashing faint red. “You call that truth? You gave her nightmares. You made her see blood that’s centuries old blood that’s been paid for.” Enzo tilted his head, smirking. “Paid for? You think redemption wipes out centuries of murder? You think pretending to love some human girl makes you clean again?” Kai was in front of him in a blink, fangs out, his voice vibrating with fury. “Watch your mouth, brother.” Enzo didn’t flinch. He met Kai’s eyes with quiet defiance. “You love her, don’t you?” Kai froze, his fangs retracting slightly. “That’s none of your business.” “Oh, but it is,” Enzo said softly. “Because I remember that girl’s face her mother’s face the night you killed them. And now her daughter has fallen in love with her parents’ murderer. Poetic, isn’t it?” Kai’s breath caught. He turned away sharply, his voice low. “I didn’t know. I didn’t know who they were.” “You knew enough,” Enzo said coldly. “You were blood-starved and furious. You tore through that village because of the curse the one you chose to bind to your bloodline.” Kai’s eyes blazed, his control slipping. “I didn’t choose it!” The words echoed through the ruined hall, raw and trembling. He took a shaky breath, his voice breaking. “I was forced into it, Enzo. By the witches. The blood curse it tied my hunger to the first family I slaughtered. Every time I feed, their descendants feel it. Their pain, their fear. That’s why I left her because she’s one of them. Candice is the last.” For a moment, silence. Enzo’s smirk faded. “You’re saying she’s connected to you by blood magic?” “Yes,” Kai whispered, his gaze distant. “Her blood sings to me. I feel her heartbeat when I close my eyes. The curse keeps me alive through her and if I ever kill again… she dies with me.” Enzo’s brows furrowed, his arrogance wavering for the first time. “So you love her, but being with her could destroy her.” Kai gave a weak laugh hollow and pained. “Exactly.” He turned toward the shattered window, the rising sun spilling gold across his face. “I didn’t want her to know. I wanted her to live without fear. But now… you’ve made sure she’ll never look at me the same way again.” Enzo stepped forward, voice softer now. “You can’t blame me for telling her the truth, brother. Lies have a way of bleeding through eventually.” Kai’s expression hardened again. “And you can’t blame me for what happens when I lose control.” A gust of wind burst through the church dark, violent. Enzo braced himself as Kai’s eyes flared crimson again, veins tracing under his skin. For a heartbeat, they stood there two brothers, divided by love and blood and centuries of ruin. Then Kai vanished. At Candice’s house... Candice hadn’t slept. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the alley the blood, Kai’s face. But what haunted her most wasn’t the violence. It was the way he’d looked at her when he confessed broken, desperate, almost human. She sat by the window, watching the dawn spill light across the trees. Somewhere out there, she knew he was watching her too. And even though fear still lingered like smoke, her heart betrayed her with a whisper she couldn’t silence: I still love him. But love in a vampire’s world was never safe.
