# Chapter 10: A Love Worth Waiting For The morning after their confession felt different. For the first time in years, Alyssa woke up with a smile that refused to fade. She reached for her phone and found a message waiting for her. **Luke:** *Good morning... girlfriend.* Alyssa laughed softly. She quickly replied. **Alyssa:** *Good morning... boyfriend.* A few seconds later, her phone rang. "So," Luke teased, "how does it feel?" "To be what?" "My girlfriend." She smiled as she looked out her bedroom window. "It feels like nothing has changed." Luke chuckled. "Really?" "Except now I don't have to pretend that I'm in love with my best friend." His heart melted. "I've waited years to hear you say that." "So have I." --- Since Luke still had two days left before returning to Cebu, they decided to spend every possible moment together. They revisited all the places that had shaped their friendship. They drank coffee at their favourite café. They walked through the university campus, now quieter than they remembered. They sat beneath the old acacia tree where they had shared countless conversations. "This place has seen everything," Alyssa said. "Our dreams." "Our arguments." "Our promises." Luke smiled. "And now..." "Our beginning." --- That afternoon, they visited the beach where they had once made a promise beneath the stars. The waves rolled gently onto the shore as the sun slowly began to set. Luke reached into his pocket and pulled out a small seashell. Alyssa laughed. "You kept it?" "I told you I keep everything that reminds me of you." She shook her head playfully. "You're impossible." "Only because of you." They sat quietly, listening to the sound of the ocean. "Do you remember what we promised here?" Luke asked. "We promised we'd always stay best friends." He nodded. "I don't want to break that promise." Alyssa looked confused. "What do you mean?" Luke smiled warmly. "I don't just want you to be the love of my life." "I want you to always be my best friend too." Alyssa slipped her hand into his. "I can promise you both." --- That evening, they met Mia for dinner. The moment Mia saw them walking hand in hand, she crossed her arms dramatically. "Finally!" Luke laughed. "You already knew." "I've known since first year." Alyssa looked surprised. "You did?" "You two looked at each other like the rest of the world didn't exist." Luke smiled sheepishly. "Were we really that obvious?" "Only to everyone except the two of you." The three of them burst into laughter. --- The following morning, reality returned. Luke had to fly back to Cebu. This time, however, saying goodbye felt different. At the airport, Alyssa held his hand tightly. "I already miss you." "I'm only one flight away." She smiled. "And one video call away." Luke nodded. "We've spent years proving that distance can't break our friendship." He gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face. "Now we'll prove it can't break our love either." Before boarding, he handed her a folded letter. "Read this after I leave." She nodded. "I will." Luke gave her one last hug before walking toward the departure gate. Just before disappearing from sight, he turned around. "I love you!" Passengers nearby smiled as Alyssa laughed through happy tears. "I love you too!" --- Later that day, Alyssa opened the letter. Inside, Luke had written: *"Dear Alyssa,* *People often say that the best relationships begin with friendship.* *Now I know they're right.* *Thank you for sharing your umbrella that rainy afternoon.* *Thank you for believing in my dreams.* *Thank you for choosing me—not only as your boyfriend, but as your best friend.* *No matter how many miles separate us, my heart will always find its way back to you.* *I'll keep building our future, one dream at a time.* *Wait for me.* *Love always,* *Luke.*" Tears rolled down Alyssa's cheeks as she carefully folded the letter and placed it inside her favourite book. --- Over the following months, their relationship grew stronger despite the distance. They planned virtual dinner dates. They watched the same movies while talking on video calls. They celebrated birthdays together online. Whenever one of them faced a difficult day, the other was only a phone call away. Their love wasn't perfect. There were missed calls because of work. Cancelled plans. Long nights filled with exhaustion. But every challenge reminded them why they had waited so long for each other. Because some loves are worth every moment of patience. --- One evening, nearly a year after they became a couple, Luke called Alyssa with exciting news. "I have something to tell you." "What is it?" "My company is opening a new branch..." Alyssa smiled. "That's wonderful!" "...in Manila." She froze. "What?" "They offered me a transfer." Alyssa covered her mouth. "Does that mean..." Luke smiled brightly. "I'm coming home." Tears of happiness filled Alyssa's eyes. For years, fate had tested their friendship. Then it tested their love. Now, for the first time, they could finally imagine a future where they would no longer have to count the days until they met again. Sometimes, love isn't about finding the perfect person at the perfect time. Sometimes, it's about choosing the same person over and over again, through every season of life. As Alyssa looked at the umbrella-shaped keychain hanging beside her desk, she smiled. One rainy afternoon had changed everything. It had given her a best friend. And eventually... It had given her forever. **End of Chapter 10**
