# Chapter 8: The Reunion Friday morning arrived sooner than either of them had expected. Alyssa woke up before her alarm rang. She stood in front of her wardrobe, trying on one outfit after another. "No... too formal." She picked up another blouse. "Too plain." Her mother peeked into her room and smiled knowingly. "Are you meeting someone special today?" Alyssa tried to hide her smile. "I'm meeting Luke." Mrs. Reyes chuckled. "I had a feeling." "It has been months since I last saw him." Her mother gently held her shoulder. "Then don't keep him waiting." --- At the airport, passengers streamed through the arrival gates. Alyssa stood quietly, her heart beating faster with every passing minute. She looked around anxiously. Then she saw him. Luke walked through the doors with a backpack slung over one shoulder and a suitcase rolling behind him. The moment their eyes met, they both smiled. Without thinking, Alyssa ran toward him. "Luke!" He dropped the handle of his suitcase just in time to catch her in a warm embrace. "I missed you," she whispered. Luke hugged her tightly. "I missed you too." For a few precious seconds, the busy airport faded into the background. Nothing else mattered. --- "You're taller," Alyssa joked as they walked toward the parking area. Luke laughed. "I don't think I grew." "You seem different." "In a good way?" She smiled. "In the best way." He looked at her. "So do you." She laughed softly. "You're just saying that." "I'm not." Their eyes met again, and for a moment, neither of them looked away. --- Instead of going straight home, Luke suggested they visit their favourite café. The owner immediately recognised them. "Look who's back!" he said cheerfully. "It's been a long time." "It has," Luke replied. The café looked exactly the same. The corner table where they used to study was still there. The smell of freshly brewed coffee filled the room. It felt as if time had stood still. They spent hours talking about everything they had missed. Luke shared stories about his projects in Cebu. Alyssa talked about the clients she had worked with and the designs she was proud of. "I brought something for you," Luke said. He reached into his bag and handed her a small gift box. Inside was a delicate silver bookmark shaped like a feather. "I saw it at a small craft shop," he explained. "It reminded me of your dream of designing book covers." Alyssa smiled warmly. "I love it." "I knew you would." She reached into her handbag. "I have something for you too." Luke opened the gift carefully. Inside was a framed illustration of the university campus. Every detail had been drawn by Alyssa herself. At the bottom of the artwork were the words: *"Where our story began."* Luke stared at it silently. "It's beautiful." "So are the memories." --- As the afternoon faded into evening, they decided to walk around the campus. Everything felt familiar. The library. The old acacia tree. The festival grounds. Finally, they reached the covered walkway where they had first met years ago. Luke looked up at the sky. "It almost looks like it's going to rain." Alyssa laughed. "Again?" "Maybe the weather likes reminding us." "Of what?" "The day everything changed." She smiled. "It was just an umbrella." Luke shook his head gently. "No." "It was the beginning of the best friendship I've ever had." His words warmed her heart. --- Just then, light raindrops began to fall. Alyssa looked up and laughed. "You've got to be kidding." Luke reached into his backpack. "You won't believe this." He pulled out the same black umbrella. "You still carry it?" "I told you..." He opened it with a smile. "It's special." They stood beneath the umbrella together once again. This time, the space felt even smaller than before. Their shoulders brushed against each other. Neither of them moved away. Instead, they simply walked in silence, listening to the gentle rhythm of the rain. --- That evening, Mia invited them to dinner with a few old classmates. The reunion was filled with laughter and stories. Nathan had received a promotion at work. Sophia had returned from studying abroad. Everyone was happy to see Luke again. As dinner ended, Mia quietly pulled Luke aside. "So..." "What?" "When are you finally going to tell her?" Luke pretended not to understand. "Tell her what?" "Don't play innocent with me." She smiled knowingly. "You've loved Alyssa for years." Luke lowered his eyes. "I know." "So what's stopping you?" "I'm afraid." "Of what?" "Losing my best friend." Mia sighed. "Luke..." She glanced across the room where Alyssa was laughing with their friends. "Sometimes the biggest risk is saying nothing." --- Later that night, Luke walked Alyssa home. The streets were quiet. The rain had stopped. As they reached her gate, neither of them wanted the evening to end. "I had a wonderful day," Alyssa said. "So did I." "I wish you didn't have to leave again." Luke looked at her with gentle eyes. "I wish that too." There was a long silence. He wanted to tell her everything. How every building he designed reminded him of the dreams they once shared. How every success felt incomplete without her beside him. How he had fallen in love with his best friend long ago. But fear held him back. Instead, he smiled. "Good night, Alyssa." She smiled back, though a part of her wished he would stay just a little longer. "Good night, Luke." As he walked away, Alyssa watched until he disappeared at the end of the street. She placed a hand over her heart. "Why does saying goodbye hurt so much?" Inside her room, she looked at the silver feather bookmark resting on her desk. A small note had been tucked inside the gift box. She hadn't noticed it before. Curious, she unfolded it. It read: *"Some stories are worth waiting for."* Alyssa smiled softly, unaware that those simple words carried a meaning Luke had not yet found the courage to say aloud. The time for hidden feelings was running out. Soon, one of them would have to take the first step. And when that moment came, their lives would never be the same again. **End of Chapter 8**
