# Chapter 5: The School Festival The university came alive as colourful banners, balloons, and lights decorated every corner of the campus. It was the most anticipated event of the year—the Annual School Festival. Every department was assigned a booth, performances were scheduled for the evening, and students worked together to make the celebration unforgettable. For Alyssa and Luke, however, the festival meant something more. It was another chance to spend time together. --- "Good morning, everyone!" Professor Santos announced during class. "This year's festival theme is **'Dreams in Colour.'** Each department will create an exhibit that represents hope, creativity, and the future." The professor looked around the room before smiling. "For this project, I have chosen two student leaders." The classroom fell silent. "Alyssa Reyes will lead the design team." Alyssa's eyes widened. "Me?" "Yes." Then the professor turned toward the back of the room. "And Luke Ramirez will lead the construction team." Luke smiled. "I'll do my best, Professor." "Since your work depends on one another, the two of you will work together throughout the project." The class immediately erupted into cheers. Mia leaned over and whispered to Alyssa, "Looks like destiny keeps pairing you two together." Alyssa laughed and gently nudged her arm. "It's only for the festival." "Sure," Mia teased with a grin. --- For the next two weeks, Alyssa and Luke spent almost every afternoon planning the exhibit. Alyssa designed colourful posters, banners, and decorative backdrops, while Luke built wooden frames and display stands with the engineering students. They often stayed on campus until sunset. One evening, Alyssa was carefully painting a large mural when she accidentally splashed blue paint across her own cheek. Luke noticed and tried not to laugh. "What?" she asked. He picked up a small mirror and held it in front of her. She gasped. "Oh no!" Before she could wipe it away, Luke gently reached for a tissue. "Hold still." He carefully brushed the paint from her cheek. For a brief moment, their eyes met. Neither of them spoke. The world around them seemed to disappear. "Ahem!" The sound of someone clearing their throat startled them both. It was Mia. "Sorry to interrupt," she said with a playful smile. "But everyone is waiting for the two lovebirds." "We're not lovebirds," Alyssa replied quickly, her cheeks turning bright red. Luke scratched the back of his neck. "We're just friends." Mia simply smiled and walked away. --- The night before the festival, the entire team stayed late to finish decorating the exhibit hall. Music played softly from a nearby speaker as students laughed while hanging lights and arranging displays. By eleven o'clock, almost everyone had gone home. Only Alyssa and Luke remained. "I'm exhausted," Alyssa sighed, sitting on the floor. Luke handed her a bottle of water. "You've worked hard." "So have you." She looked around the hall. "I think we did a good job." Luke smiled. "We did." The room glowed beneath strings of tiny fairy lights. Their mural stretched across the wall, surrounded by handmade decorations created by the entire class. "It looks beautiful," Alyssa whispered. Luke glanced at her. "I agree." She smiled. "You mean the exhibit?" Luke realised what he had said and laughed nervously. "Right... the exhibit." Alyssa couldn't stop smiling. --- The next morning, the festival officially began. Students, parents, and visitors filled the campus. Their exhibit quickly became one of the most popular attractions. People admired Alyssa's artwork and praised Luke's creative displays. Professor Santos proudly approached them. "You two make an excellent team." "Thank you, Professor," they replied together. Later that afternoon, the winners of the exhibit competition were announced. "And the Best Festival Exhibit Award goes to..." Everyone held their breath. "...the College of Arts!" Cheers erupted across the hall. Alyssa covered her mouth in surprise. "We won!" Luke laughed and lifted her into a joyful hug. "We did it!" For a few seconds, they forgot about everyone watching. When they finally stepped apart, the crowd burst into applause. Mia whispered to another classmate, "One day they're going to realise they're already acting like a couple." --- That evening, the campus hosted a grand celebration. Colourful lights sparkled above the open field while a live band played romantic songs. Students danced beneath the stars. Some sang along. Others simply enjoyed the atmosphere. Luke looked at Alyssa. "Would you like to walk for a while?" She nodded. "I'd like that." They wandered through the lantern-lit pathways, enjoying the cool evening breeze. The sounds of laughter and music faded behind them. "This has been my favourite festival," Alyssa admitted. "Mine too." "Because we won?" Luke smiled. "That's part of it." She looked at him curiously. "What's the other part?" He hesitated. "Because I got to spend every day with you." Alyssa felt her heart race. She didn't know how to respond. Instead, she simply smiled. "So did I." --- As they reached the campus garden, fireworks suddenly lit up the night sky. Bright colours exploded above them—gold, blue, pink, and silver. Students around the campus cheered in excitement. Alyssa looked up, her eyes reflecting the dazzling lights. "It's beautiful." Luke wasn't watching the fireworks. He was watching her. In that moment, he realised something he had been trying to ignore for months. This wasn't just friendship anymore. He had fallen in love with his best friend. The thought frightened him. What if she didn't feel the same way? What if confessing his feelings destroyed everything they had built together? He took a deep breath and forced himself to smile. For now, he would keep his feelings hidden. Some things were too precious to risk losing. Beside him, Alyssa silently made a wish as another firework bloomed across the sky. She wished that no matter what happened in the future, she and Luke would always stay together. She didn't realise that her wish was no longer the wish of a best friend. It was the wish of someone whose heart had quietly fallen in love. Neither of them spoke about their feelings that night. But as the final firework faded into the darkness, destiny had already begun guiding them toward a future where the truth could no longer remain hidden. Their greatest challenge was still waiting for them. And with it would come a choice that could either bring their hearts together... or pull them apart forever.
