Chapter 2 Armstrong's POV Seated on the armchair, with a cup of coffee beside me, while the newspaper was placed on my lap, I heard the doorbell ring. That is Annie, my sweetheart. “On my way, babe” I shouted out romantically, dropping the paper on the chair as I moved to the door but was shocked by the figure standing before me. My eyes were narrowing at the sight of the woman standing before me, I was filled with instant anger. Emily? My ex-girlfriend. The one who had left me when I needed her most, I clenched my fits tightly, my jaw dropped as I recalled the betrayal of her. What was she doing here? Hadn't she caused me enough pain already ? I have moved on, found someone who loved me for who I am, so I don't need her here. "Leave before I do something naughty to you " I growled at her, my voice low and menacing, I didn't want my mom to know she was here that would attract so much. But she kept pleading. I didn't want to hear her excuses or apologies. I just wanted her gone. I wanted to forget the memories of our time together, the memories that still lingered in my mind like a ghost. I wanted to erase the pain she had caused me, the pain that still lingered in my heart when she left. But Emily didn't budge. Instead, she took a step forward,as she stared at my face. "Armstrong, please hear me out, it wasn't what you think " she said, her voice soft, the sane voice that made me fall for her, She looked different, yet the same. Her hair was longer, her eyes seemed brighter, but the spark in her eyes was still the same, she was prettier than before. It was the spark that drew me to her in the first place. I raised an eyebrow, skeptical. What could she possibly say that would make me want to listen? But something about her expression stayed in my hand, and I nodded curtly for her to continue. Maybe I needed to hear her out after that I would chase her out. She didn't deserve my love and care, instead, Annie did. Maybe it was the desperation in her eyes, or maybe it was the glimmer of hope that she might actually have a valid reason for leaving me. Whatever it was, I was willing to listen. Emily took a deep breath before speaking. "I know I left you without explanation, but I had no choice. I received an emergency call from my family overseas. My mother was ill, and I had to go to her. I didn't know about your accident until I returned, and by then...it was too late. I had tried searching for you but I couldn't not until someone disclosed it to me." She spoke quickly, the words tumbling out of her mouth like a waterfall. I could see the sincerity in her eyes, and for a moment, I believed her, the tears in her eyes were dripping down her cheeks uncontrollable. I felt a pang of surprise at her words. Could it be true? Had she really not known about my accident? Or was she playing games with me?I searched her face, looking for any sign of deception, but all I saw was sincerity. Maybe I had misjudged her. Maybe she wasn't the heartless person I thought she was. But the truth is, it's late already, Annie had taken over her position. But before I could respond, to tell her I got someone else in my life,Emily dropped another bombshell. "Armstrong, I'm pregnant. I was pregnant when I left you." Her words hung in the air like a challenge, and I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. Did she just say she was pregnant? For me?. My eyes widened in shock. Pregnant? How could that be? I shook my head, trying to clear the cobwebs. "No, that's not possible. You would have told me to contact me or what other means, but you didn't and after 6 months you came back to announce your pregnancy to me." I spoke automatically, my mind reeling with the implications of her words, maybe she needed to stop the games. I can't betray Annie for anything. She was my rock , there for me when I almost gave up. Emily shook her head, tears welling up in her eyes. "I was going to, but then I got the call from my family, and I had to leave. And then...I didn't know how to reach you, I got no one contact." She spoke softly, her voice cracking with emotion as she started another round of tears. I felt a wave of confusion wash over me. What was I supposed to do? Part of me wanted to believe her, to think that she was telling the truth. But another part of me was screaming to be cautious, to not trust her. And then, just as I was about to respond, my mother walked into the room, a look of excitement on her face, she called to have words with me, while inviting Emily to take a seat. "Armstrong, dear, I see you've reunited with Emily. And just in time, too. We need an heir, and Emily is willing to provide one." My mother's words were like a slap in the face, and I felt a surge of anger at her interference. Why would she say that? I thought she hated Emily for what she did. How soon did she forget about Annie, the daughter in law she was proud about? The ideal wife for me! I felt a surge of surprise at my mother's sudden acceptance of Emily. But as I looked at Emily, I saw the desperation in her eyes, and something inside me shifted. Maybe this was what I needed. Maybe this was what my family needed. And with that thought, I nodded in agreement, sealing my fate. As I nodded, Emily's face lit up with relief, and she threw her arms around me. I felt a pang of guilt as I hugged her back, knowing that I had just betrayed Annie, my wife. But as we pulled back, I saw Annie standing in the doorway, a look of shock and hurt on her face. I felt a wave of regret wash over me, but it was too late. The damage was done. "Annie, I..." I began, but she cut me off. "You're just going to throw me away like that?" she spat, her voice venomous. "After everything I've done for you?" Her eyes blazed with anger, and I felt a surge of guilt at my betrayal. I heard what my mother told her, and I knew she must be pained by those words but I waved it off. She was quick with the divorce, moreso she is yet to prove she loved me by providing an heir to me. She meant nothing to me, Emily is in better shape, high class and romantic than her. I wonder why I should feel sorry for Annie. I will sign the divorce paper with full chest and never accost her back when she comes crawling and begging for forgiveness. I watched her move to the room, packed her clothes and came down with her suitcase. Without any words she made to leave but a piece of paper which was in an envelope dropped from her hand. I tried to pick it up,to check what it contained but she was quick to snap it away. “Don't mind her, she will come back begging “ My mother assured me as I watched her leave without any words but my mind kept going back on what the piece of paper might contain.
