The promise

Night settled gently over the sanctuary. One by one, lanterns illuminated the winding stone paths, their warm amber glow reflecting in the crystal pools scattered throughout the gardens. The fragrance of jasmine and moonflowers drifted through the cool evening air, mingling with the scent of fresh bread from the kitchens. For generations, this hour had belonged to peace. Patients gathered beneath the open colonnades to share stories of the roads that had led them here. Children laughed as they chased glowing fireflies through the gardens, while elderly healers quietly brewed medicines that would steep until dawn. To a stranger, it would have seemed impossible that darkness could ever touch a place like this. Elara wished she could believe that. Ever since the vision in the drying room, an uneasiness had settled inside her. She had tried to lose herself in work, but the image of the black wolf beneath the crimson moon refused to leave her mind. She wandered through the herb gardens, fingers brushing against rows of lavender and silver thyme. Gardening had always calmed her thoughts. Tonight, it didn't. A familiar voice interrupted the silence. "You've been avoiding everyone." She turned to find Master Ilyra approaching with slow, measured steps. "I wasn't avoiding anyone." "No?" The elder smiled knowingly. "You disappeared after your afternoon duties." "I only needed some air." "You've lived in this forest your whole life." Ilyra looked around the moonlit garden. "I don't think it's the air you're searching for." Elara lowered her eyes. "I saw something today." The elder's expression softened. "What kind of something?" "A vision." For the first time that evening, Master Ilyra grew completely still. "What did you see?" Elara hesitated. "I don't know if it meant anything." "Tell me anyway." She drew a slow breath. "There was rain... a battlefield... and a giant black wolf beneath a red moon." She paused. "It looked at me." "And then?" "My pendant glowed." Silence. The elder's face remained calm, but Elara noticed her grip tightening around the ashwood staff. "It has never done that before." "No." "It hasn't." "You don't seem surprised." "I've spent many years waiting for this day." The answer only deepened Elara's confusion. "What does it mean?" Master Ilyra looked toward the Sacred Moon Tree standing proudly in the centre of the sanctuary. "I wish I could answer that." "You can." The elder met her eyes. "I won't." Before Elara could protest, Ilyra gently placed a hand on her shoulder. "Some truths protect us until we're ready to carry them." "And if we're never ready?" "Then life has a way of deciding for us." At the same time, Lucien stood alone beneath the sanctuary's eastern archway. Moonlight spilled across the white stone, casting long shadows over the gardens beyond. His thoughts were interrupted by quiet footsteps. Ronan appeared beside him. "Our scouts are in position." "Anything?" "Nothing." Lucien didn't relax. "That's exactly what concerns me." Ronan leaned against one of the pillars. "I've never seen you this unsettled." Lucien's eyes remained fixed on the forest. "When I was seventeen, my father told me something before my first campaign." "What?" "'If the forest grows silent...'" He stopped. "'...listen harder.'" "And?" Lucien's expression darkened. "It usually means something dangerous is listening to you." Almost on cue... A distant owl fell silent. Then another. Within moments, every sound from the forest disappeared. No insects. No birds. No rustling leaves. Only stillness. Ronan slowly straightened. "You hear it too." Lucien nodded once. "They're here." Far beyond the sanctuary... Hundreds of figures waited among the trees. None spoke. None moved. Silver masks reflected the moonlight like pale ghosts suspended in darkness. At their centre stood a man cloaked entirely in black. His face remained hidden behind an unmarked silver mask, smoother than all the others. He watched the sanctuary in complete silence. One of his lieutenants approached and knelt. "The barrier remains intact." "I know." "The Shadowfang warriors are alert." "I know." "The Alpha suspects an attack." The masked leader remained still. "Good." The lieutenant frowned. "Good?" "It means he's exactly where I need him." Another warrior stepped forward. "The girl hasn't left the sanctuary." The leader finally smiled. "She won't." His gaze remained fixed on the glowing Moon Tree rising above the rooftops. "She has spent twenty-four years believing this place is the safest place in the world." His voice was almost sympathetic. "Tonight..." "...she will learn that nowhere is beyond the reach of history." He slowly raised one gloved hand. Every masked warrior looked towards him. No speeches. No battle cries. Only a single command. "Prepare." Hundreds of shadows disappeared deeper into the forest. Back inside the sanctuary, Elara found herself unable to sleep. She stepped onto the balcony outside her room. The moon hung low above the trees, impossibly bright. For reasons she couldn't explain, she reached for the pendant around her neck. It felt warm. Almost alive. She frowned. Then... A whisper drifted through the night. So faint she almost mistook it for the wind. "...Elara..." Her heart skipped. She looked around. The balcony was empty. "...Elara..." The voice came again. Older. Gentler. Not frightening. Calling. She followed it to the edge of the balcony overlooking the Sacred Moon Tree. Its silver leaves shimmered beneath the moonlight. Then one leaf detached from the highest branch. Instead of falling... It floated toward her. Slowly. Purposefully. It landed in the palm of her hand. The instant her fingers touched it— Her pendant flared with brilliant silver light. At that exact moment... Far beyond the sanctuary walls... The masked leader looked up sharply. His smile vanished. "It has begun." He drew his sword. The black blade seemed to drink the moonlight itself. Then, for the first time that night... The sanctuary's ancient warning bell rang. Once. Its lonely sound echoed across the forest. Every healer froze. Every Shadowfang warrior reached for a weapon. Lucien was already running before the second bell rang. The warning bell rang a second time. Its deep, mournful tone echoed across the sanctuary, silencing every conversation. Patients looked around in confusion while apprentices instinctively gathered children and the elderly toward the inner halls. Then came the third bell. No one living had ever heard it. Master Ilyra's face paled. "The eastern gate," she whispered. Lucien was already moving. "Ronan!" he called. His Beta appeared instantly. "Get every civilian inside. Half the warriors with me—the rest guard the inner courtyard." Without hesitation, the Shadowfang warriors sprang into action. Their discipline was remarkable, forming defensive lines within moments. Elara hurried to help the frightened patients. A small boy clung tightly to her robes. "What's happening?" She forced a reassuring smile despite the fear growing in her chest. "It's alright." Even as she spoke, she realised she no longer believed her own words. Beyond the sanctuary walls... Flames suddenly erupted among the eastern pines. Smoke billowed into the night sky. A frightened apprentice ran into the courtyard. "Master! The forest is burning!" Lucien's eyes narrowed. "No..." Ronan looked at him. "What is it?" "It's too controlled." The flames spread in a perfect line rather than wildly through the trees. It wasn't a wildfire. It was bait. Lucien turned sharply. "Don't chase the fire!" Too late. A deafening explosion shattered the night. Not from the eastern forest... But from the sanctuary's western gate. Ancient oak doors burst inward, splintering into a storm of burning wood. Masked warriors flooded through the breach. They wore no colours, no banners, no crest that identified their allegiance. Only smooth silver masks reflecting the firelight. One elderly healer stepped forward with empty hands. "You stand beneath the First Promise. Lay down your—" An arrow struck his chest. He collapsed without another word. For one terrible heartbeat... The sanctuary froze. Then chaos erupted. Screams echoed through the courtyard. Patients fled in every direction while apprentices struggled to lead them to safety. Lucien drew his sword. "Shadowfang!" His command cut through the panic. "Protect the healers!" Steel met steel. The courtyard that had known only peace for centuries became a battlefield. Elara stood frozen. She had treated wounds. She had comforted the dying. But she had never watched someone killed before. A masked assassin spotted her. His sword rose. She couldn't move. Before the blade could fall— Steel clashed. Lucien intercepted the strike, driving the attacker backwards with a powerful kick. "Go!" he shouted. "I can't leave them!" "You can't help them if you're dead!" Another attacker lunged. Lucien met him with calm precision, every movement controlled. He fought not with rage but with purpose, shielding those behind him. Elara stared in disbelief. He wasn't simply defending the sanctuary. He was defending strangers. Across the courtyard, Master Ilyra stood before the Sacred Moon Tree. She planted her staff firmly upon the ground. Ancient words flowed from her lips. The tree answered. Silver light raced through its roots, spreading beneath the sanctuary like flowing rivers. A shimmering barrier rose over the buildings. For a moment, hope returned. Then four masked warriors hurled black crystals against the glowing shield. Cracks spread across the barrier. The masked leader stepped forward and drew a blade blacker than midnight. With a single strike... The barrier shattered. The explosion hurled everyone backwards. The sanctuary's oldest protection was gone. The leader pointed his sword toward Master Ilyra. "Kill the elder." Every assassin changed direction at once. They had never come for the sanctuary. They had come for her. "No!" Elara cried. She ran without thinking. Master Ilyra caught Elara's hands. "My little moon..." "You have to come with me!" "There isn't time." The elder removed a small crystal pendant wrapped in faded blue cloth and pressed it into Elara's trembling hands. "The Heart of the First Moon." "What is it?" "Our hope." "I don't understand." "You will." An arrow sliced through the air. Lucien shouted. "Down!" Elara turned instinctively. The arrow was aimed at Master Ilyra. Without thinking... She threw herself in front of her teacher. Pain exploded through her shoulder. The poisoned arrow drove her to the ground. Darkness crept into the edges of her vision. Master Ilyra knelt beside her, tears filling her eyes. "You were always willing to carry another person's pain." She placed a trembling hand on Elara's forehead. "Forgive me... for keeping the truth from you." The Sacred Moon Tree burst into brilliant silver light. Its leaves swirled through the night like thousands of glowing stars. The surviving healers began singing an ancient hymn. One by one, they knelt. Lucien felt the air itself tremble. Master Ilyra smiled through her tears. "For a thousand years we healed the world." She looked at Elara. "Now... the world must protect its last healer." Silver light engulfed the courtyard. The masked leader took a reluctant step backwards. "We have what we came for," he said. "Withdraw." Within seconds, the surviving assassins disappeared into the burning forest. Silence followed. Only the crackling of flames remained. The light slowly faded. Master Ilyra's strength faded with it. She leaned against Elara, smiling with quiet peace. "My little moon..." "You are no longer my apprentice." Her fingers gently touched the new pendant around Elara's neck. "You are..." "...the Last Moon Healer." Her hand slipped away. The glow left her eyes. Elara's cry echoed through the ruined sanctuary. Lucien lowered his head in respect. Even the Shadowfang warriors fell silent. The sanctuary had survived wars, kings and centuries. Tonight... It had lost its heart. Ronan approached quietly. "Alpha." Lucien looked up. "More riders are coming." He looked at the burning sanctuary, then at Elara. There was nothing left to defend. Only someone left to protect. He knelt beside her. "We have to leave." For a long moment, Elara didn't move. Then, wiping away her tears, she gave a single silent nod. As dawn's first light crept over the mountains, Lucien led her into the ancient forest. Behind them, the Sacred Moon Tree released one final silver leaf. It drifted through the smoke before disappearing into the wind. Neither of them noticed the figure watching from a distant ridge. The masked leader stood motionless, his silver mask gleaming beneath the fading moon. "The Heart has awakened," he murmured. "And the game..." He turned and vanished into the shadows. "...has finally begun."
