Aldric’s Move 2

776 Words
I looked at my friends, my chosen family, and realized I didn’t want to run or hide. What I truly wanted was to stand and face Aldric’s challenge- the Rite, not just for myself, but to prove that I could choose my own fate rather than accept the one imposed on me. Even if it cost me everything, I would confront the life-changing consequences rather than remain powerless. The fire burned low, shadows devouring my scars. I stood up, every wound and promise stitched together, my voice trembling on its first note before turning steady and cold. I’d see Aldric,” I said. “On my terms. Not his.” No one argued. No one tried to stop me. They just nodded, the way people do when the decision is already made, when all that’s left is to bear witness. Cass pressed a small knife into my palm. “Don’t trust him,” she said. “Don’t let him see you flinch.” Fen met my eyes, silver and unreadable. “If you don’t come back, I’ll burn the world down to find you.” Kael spoke nothing, just clasped my shoulder, the pressure lingering long after he let go. I walked into the night with the letter clenched to my heart, pulse thundering. The woods pressed close, their darkness swallowing me, every root and branch hissing secrets I was too raw to chase.was waiting. The Rite was waiting. Aldric was waiting. I found him in an old stone clearing, where moonlight pooled on moss that shimmered with faint silver-green veins. The air resonated with the scent of earth and wet fern, mixed with something sharper, like an undercurrent of ozone, as if lightning hid in the roots. Wisps of pale mist curled between ancient standing stones and drifted around my ankles, while the air throbbed alongside quiet, invisible energy. Fireflies danced along the edges, their blue glow flickering against the deep darkness. The place felt alive, waiting. He stood alone in the circle, his shoulders hunched and his skin grey in the pale light. He looked smaller and older than I remembered, but his eyes were still sharp and cold. He watched me approach, not moving, not speaking, just letting the silence stretch. “You wanted to see me,” I said, voice unshaken. He nodded. “You’re not what I expected.” I shrugged. “Neither are you.” He smiled, thin and tired. “The world is about to change. One way or another. You think you can hold it together?” “I don’t have to hold it together,” I said. “Just long enough to break it open. My goal isn’t just survival, it’s to change the rules Aldric set, to challenge the order he believes is unbreakable.” He laughed, but it was a fragmented sound. “You think you’re the only one who’s lost something? You think you’re the only one who’s had to make choices?” “I know I’m not,” I said. “But I’m the only one who’s willing to pay the price.” He stepped closer, his voice muted. “This is your last chance, Lira. Walk away. Let the old order stand. You don’t know what’s coming.” I shook my head. “Neither do you.” He stared at me, searching for something he’d never find. After a long moment, he stepped back. “Tomorrow,” he said. “The Rite. Win or lose, you’ll pay the cost.” He turned and disappeared into the trees, leaving me alone in the clearing, the moon cold on my face. I walked back to camp. My heart throbbed. My hands were shaking. The fire was out, but my friends were waiting- Cass, Fen, Kael, ready to stand with me, whatever that meant. Tomorrow, I would take my place in the Rite. Tomorrow, I would find out if the world was ready for a correction. And if it wasn’t, then I’d burn it down and start over. I lay awake for hours, the world's weight crushing my chest, the wind in the trees whispering names of the broken. Jax’s ghost haunted me, along with the Silver Cells, underground cages meant to erase hope. I ached for everyone told they were worthless- small, weak, unimportant- and the silent screams that never reached the surface. I thought about my father, about the letter, about the promise I’d made- to break the cages, to end the silence, to make sure that no one was forgotten. When the first daybreak light touched the Hollow, I stood. Shoulders squared, heart beating. I was ready to face whatever unfolded next.
