40. That Changes Everything

Bernard had taken the jet ride to Las Vegas quite well. Once he was airborne, he became fascinated with the lay of the land below. When he began to enjoy the ride, they landed in Las Vegas, where two SUVs were waiting. Bernard was helped down the ladder from the jet and roughly extracted from the jumpsuit and helmet. He was pushed into the second of two SUVs. Two plain-clothes police officers were assigned to each vehicle. The two cars raced through the city with light bars on and sirens blaring. Then, the lights and sirens were turned off about a block away from their destination. In the front passenger seat, the officer, Commander Barnes, called on a cell phone, “ETA five minutes.” The cars pulled up in front of the Vegas Business Center.
