60. A Grateful Nation

Ramona sat in a Walter Reed hospital room on a chair next to her husband’s hospital bed. The door was closed, and the blinds were drawn. Rico had his right leg in a cast that was elevated by cables. Rico held Ramona’s hand as she dozed, her head tilted to one side. Ramona had stayed awake for hours fretting over Rico’s injuries. Now satisfied that Rico would be all right, she had allowed herself to sleep. There was a knock at the door. When it opened, two men in suits Rico had never seen before entered the room. They closed the door behind them. Without a word, they scrutinized the room. One of the men went back to the door and opened it. Ramona woke up just as the President of The United States entered the room. Ramona, in uniform, immediately got out of the chair and stood at attention
