--- THE COST by [Author’s Name] --- Chapter 4 – The Fallout By the next morning, the story was everywhere. “Whistleblower Exposes Data Fraud in Major Tech Firm.” “Investor Scandal Rocks Adewale Holdings.” The headlines flashed across every business channel, every social media feed. Daniel’s name was mentioned in all of them — half hailed him as a hero, the other half painted him as a traitor. He sat in his apartment, TV off, phone buzzing endlessly. Journalists wanted interviews. Angry investors demanded explanations. Strangers sent messages — some thanking him for his courage, others calling him a fool. Kemi had texted only once: > “They’ve frozen our company account. Adewale’s people are threatening legal action.” Daniel ran a hand through his hair, exhaustion tugging at every part of him. He had expected consequences, but not the speed, not the noise. Then came a knock at the door. It was Tunde, looking nervous but determined. “Sir,” he said, stepping inside, “I heard what’s happening. Everyone at the office is scared, but some of us support you.” Daniel gave a weary smile. “That means more than you know.” Tunde hesitated. “They say Adewale’s blaming you — that you forged the data yourself to sabotage him.” Daniel froze. The accusation cut deep. “He’s desperate,” he said finally. “He knows the truth will catch up.” Still, fear crept into his chest. In Nigeria’s business world, power often meant rewriting the story to fit one’s side. Adewale had money, lawyers, and influence. Daniel had only the truth — and that didn’t always win. The day dragged on. Calls from partners stopped. Some who had praised him the night before now avoided him entirely. The online noise grew louder, drowning reason in speculation. By evening, Daniel took a walk through the city to clear his head. The rain had stopped, leaving puddles that shimmered in the streetlights. As he passed a small kiosk, an old man looked up from his newspaper. “You’re the young man who spoke the truth,” the vendor said softly. “It’s not an easy road, but it’s the right one.” Daniel paused, surprised. “You believe that?” The man nodded. “My son once lost his job for refusing a bribe. It broke him for a time. But today, he sleeps with peace in his heart. That’s something money can’t buy.” Daniel smiled faintly. “Peace,” he echoed, the word feeling both distant and near. When he returned home, another message awaited him — this time from Chioma. > “I saw the news. You did the right thing, even if it costs you everything. I’m proud of you.” He read it twice, the tension in his chest loosening slightly. Maybe the world could take everything — the company, the money, even his reputation — but not his name. That still belonged to him. As he turned off the lights, the city outside glowed like a restless giant, whispering with ambition and deceit. Daniel knew this was only the beginning. Truth had set him free — but freedom, he was learning, came with a heavy cost. ---
