Abigail's Pov,
Hyperventilating, she brushed her palm against her chest to contain her excitement. However, that only lasted a few seconds before she rattled off excitedly,
"Hurrah! Mom, you have been hired," her burst of exuberance overwhelmed me.
"Aha, yay, I have a job...... at that moment, I was like a dog with two tails, hopping, wiggling, and twirling around in delight.
I didn't care what job or position I was hired for. We just kept dancing, but the instant she mentioned the company's name, it was like a bombshell.
Audrey, can you repeat the name of the company? I asked perplex.
"I said... you have... been hired... by the "Watson's Corporation—"What?" That's impossible. Sweetie, are you sure that that's the name of the company?
"Sure," is not a suitable word Mom, try verify because I verified it," she said with certainty.
To hell with them, I could rather become a maid than to work in that company. At this point, I was going nuts in my head.
"That's the reaction I was expecting: 'stunned but yet confused.' You must be thinking that it's not real." But it sure is. I told you that Mr Watson was the best. See, he had saved us!
BTW, I was the one who did your application. I saw that you were too embarrassed to ask for assistance, so I took the initiative, and now, thanks to my perseverance and faith, you have been employed.
However, it doesn't matter who did it. What matters is that a well-paid job awaits you. It's so exciting that we can now live a deserving life, and I get to study at my dream school.
Audrey, come sit. I've got something to tell you, I knew that this would be difficult for her to handle, so I gave her a cup of her favorite ice cream.
"Are we celebrating because you never allow me to have ice cream around dinner time?"
You deserve a treat, for a job well done. So yeah, we're celebrating you!
Really, Mom? You're taking the job."Phew, what a relief. Looking at your facial expression earlier, I was worried that you weren't going to."
"Cheers to you, Mommy," she raised a taost.
Audrey, I want you to know that I appreciate all of your efforts and strategies in getting me this job. Sweetie, I am so proud of you, and I also want you to always remember that I am grateful for having you in my life.
"Okay, Mom, what are you getting at because I am starting to feel a weird vibe?"
Audrey, I am not taking this job, I'm so — "Eh?
What?? What did you just say?' Uh-oh, you aren't kidding, Mom?"
Sweetie, I am serious. I don't want to work in that company. But don't you worry about studying at your dream school because I already got it covered. I am getting a job tomorrow at the school and as a staff I get sixty percent off your entire your tuition and requirements and with my salary I can pay the remaining forty percent.
"Wow, amazing, congrats, Mom! I'm stunned!— 'Slurp!'" She said and took another slurp of her ice cream.
Sweetie, aren't you going to burst out after all of your hard work?
"Hmm, so you expect me to get angry at you? I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I am not angry if you decide to put your wants ahead of our needs is up to you."
But FYI, if the window for admission closes without you registering me. Is then that you will see the other version of this chatty and carefree little genius of yours. I will become.. so... difficult... for you to live with!
As I walked to the kitchen, I could hear the distinct voice of a woman at the other end of the phone saying:
"She can't get that job because it would ruin all of my plans, I have come too far already to have it interrupted.
Anyway, thank you for telling me I will come up with something to terminate it right away."
Whose employment is she planning to terminate? I asked my aunt.
"Jesus Christ! If you sneak up on me like that again, you'll give me a heart attack! How long have you even been standing there?"
She asked with her hands trembling as she tried to cancel the call. Her reaction was like that of a kid who had just been busted.
Not long enough to catch up on the conversation, I said, hoping she would fill me in, but she let out a "phew" and quickly changed the topic to Audrey's.
"Why isn't she with you for breakfast? She should be starving by now since she didn't eat dinner last night."
Well, I thought the same also, but she said that she's fasting and that you always allow her to do it, so I let her be.
"No, she's not. We always do it together. Who fell asleep the first between you two last night?"
She did, she dose off in less than ten minutes. I beat her to it for the first time, I said excitedly.
"Uh-oh, she's distancing herself from you," my aunt implied.
"Audrey doesn't have it in her to hold in her opinions about things, so if she knows that what she wants to say will hurt your feelings she will usually stay away from you or become unchatty around you."
I needed to confirm it, so I went back to the room, took out two suits, and pretended that I needed her opinion, but she just answered hastily:
"Pick the one you want. My opinion doesn't matter because no matter what I say or do, you will end up choosing the one you want."
Audrey, you are angry with me, aren't you?
"Alright, let me snap out of it! I'm angry at you, Mom. How could you reject a job at the country's number one company and settle for such a ridiculous one that you and I know you won't get?
There's no way you are going to get that job. That principle, though your best friend, she can't help you because it would ruin her as well.
Relax, sweetie Principle Helena owes me a lot, you will see.
"Think about it. This is a company that 99% of the working population of this country seeks to get hired at. This is a golden opportunity."
Well, I guess I'll make up the one percent who believes that there is wealth outside of that so-called company, then.
Honestly, Mom, I always thought that my struggles would end after you came out, but I guess I was wrong. So since you've decided to do what you want, you shouldn't be surprised when I too starts to do what I want.
If you make me attend any other school, my highest scores, whether in homework or an exam, will "Ds."
Ha-ha, sweetie, I know how much you love being the face of things, so I doubt you will.
"Why are you being such a diva, Mom?
No parent will entrust the feeding of their kids to you. Not after serving those years on an allegation that you poisoned and killed a child."
At this moment, I just stood motionless, but thankfully, a call came in.
"Beep... beep..... boop!"
Wassup girl. Oh, sorry, my bad, you are now my boss, and I need to acknowledge that. Good day, Ma'am! I said, smiling, but my smile soon turned into fawn.
What?? But you assured me that I would get that job. Whatever happened to, "I will go out of my way to give you the job?"
Don't you dare give me that crap, Helena. Have you forgotten that I made you what you are today? I used mine influence back then to make you principle of that school. So you are going to do the— "pip-pip" Hello? Helena?
"Oops, oh-uh, somebody just... got rejected?"
"Look on the bright side, Mommy. At least you didn't waste money on transportation this time, and what more is that you have just enough time to get into this elegant blazer and rush down to Mr Watson's office."
