We hadn’t been on the road long when it happened.
One second the path ahead of us was clear—nothing but the narrow stretch of dirt road cutting through the trees, the headlights carving out a tunnel of visibility in the dark—and the next, the forest moved.

Three wolves burst from the tree line with enough force that the branches behind them snapped and recoiled, their bodies low and fast as they angled straight toward the SUV.
