Chapter 39 “Mykal? Mykal wake up!” Mykal recognized the voice, even though it sounded muffled. “Mother,” he said. He opened his eyes, blinking. He shut them. The bright light burned. “Oh, thank goodness,” she said. She had him by the shoulders. He thought his head might be in her lap, and tried opening his eyes a second time. “Where am I?” “On the road,” she said. “On the road to the castle.” He was right where he had been. “I am so tired.” “You’ve done well, son. I am proud of you.” “Is it over? Has the war ended?” As if in response to his question, cannons boomed in the distance. “It’s not over. It won’t be over for some time.” It was dark outside. This confused him, until he realized the bright light that hurt his head had been something inside his skull, behind his eyeballs
