Chapter 2: Someone from the past

Lucan Work seemed to drag on forever. I wasn’t so lucky today and had four people want a zombie summoned. I’d spread the appointments out all for next week and the rest of my clients were happy to have me talk to their loved ones through spirit instead of zombie. When closing time finally came, I went out to Dana. “Where am I meeting her?” She knew who I was talking about, “she’s coming here she said, so hang on,” she got her phone out to look at the time, “she should be here in about twenty minutes.” Dana started putting away the files and shutting down the computer, and while she did, I watched her. When she wasn’t mouthing off or winding me up she was breathtakingly beautiful, and it wasn’t any of that vampire glamour c.rap either. Dana was truly a beautiful woman with her long honey blonde hair that fell to her hips, she always had it flicked to one side. She had Dark blue eyes, full pouty lips and soft tan skin, her body was slender and lean but still had all those feminine curves, nice a.ss, thighs, hips and big b.reasts for someone so slim. A folder thrown at my head had me jolted from my thoughts. “What the f***k?” I snapped. “Stop perving over me, you don’t want me, remember.” Her hands were on her hips and she had both eyebrows raised. “So? I can still look.” “No, you can’t, Es will do more than throw a folder at your head when she finds out.” “She won’t find out because you’re my best friend, and you wouldn’t snitch on me, plus I wasn’t thinking anything sexual.” “Really, so you weren’t thinking of my a.ss and t.its or checking them out?” I groaned and muttered, “fine, maybe a little bit.” “Stop it,” she said. When I just looked at her, she sighed, “I don’t want you to go back to coming to me for s**x, I know I came onto you the other day, but I realize it was stupid even though it gave you a new lead. The minute you start noticing me again is the minute I know you’ve started moving on and given up, you can’t give up, we will get her back.” She was right, I wasn’t interested in Dana, she was beautiful, but it didn’t usually bother me unless I was horny as hell back when we slept together for fun before I’d met Esmeralda. I didn’t want to give up yet even though deep down I didn’t think we’d ever get her back. “Yeah, I know, you’re right.” Someone knocked on the building door as it was now closed, but it wasn’t Diamond, it was a man and I knew this man. I couldn’t move, I was frozen to the spot just staring at him, Dana had to go and let him in. He glared at me when he stepped inside, and I knew I had my cold, unreadable face on. I took a step towards him, and then another. His face broke into a grin and I grinned back at him, “brother, how do you fare these days?” He asked and hugged me. “How on earth are you still alive?” I asked him because standing before me was William, the same man who had been by my side when I’d fought Aramaya as a knight, long before Dana and even Esmeralda had been born. I’d seen him die in front of me and yet here he stood. “It’s a long story,” he laughed. “Come on, you can tell me over a drink,” I said and grabbed my coat. The pub I usually went to with Dana was only down the street, and it wasn’t long before we were all sat with a drink. “Why didn’t you find me?” I asked. He looked into his glass, his shoulder-length black hair falling into his eyes. He still looked the same, same dark brown eyes, rugged looks. “I was too afraid, Lucan, I know how deep your hatred for vampires goes, I feared you’d stake me on the spot.” I frowned at him confused and Dana burst out laughing making us both look at her. “Sorry,” she gasped, looking at William she carried on, “Lucans been dating and f.ucking a vampire, so I don’t think you need to worry.” Big.F.ucking. Mouth. I took a deep calm breath and tried not to growl at her, “yes, but she was different from any vampire We’ve ever met, she was your best friend.” I was glaring at her, but William pulled our attention back to him when he asked, “was?” “She died,” I said it matter-of-factly but as he always had in years past, William saw through me, he put a hand on my shoulder, “I am sorry, my brother, if Rosanne were to die I think I’d die with her.” I ran my hand through my hair and cleared my throat, I didn’t want anyone to know how much it hurt. “Who’s Rosanne?” I asked. “Oh, you probably know her by her stage name, Diamond,” he laughed. “I never took you for a man to date a stripper,” I said and took a sip of my drink. “She is more than that, she’s the reason I’m alive today.” When I looked at him my eyebrows raised high, he smiled and nodded, “yes my friend, after that abomination tried to kill me, Rosanne found me and took me back to her home. I had a tiny bit of life left in me, and she turned me.” “You’re a f.ucking vampire now?” I asked, I hadn’t sensed it like I normally could. “Well, Rosanne explained about you and your lady tonight before I came here, we are the same only the other way around, I am not quite vampire, but I’m not quite the necromancer I once was either, I am both.” “So you’re a, what did she call it? ‘Enchante morte’?” He nodded without humour. “Do you drink blood?” I asked. “A little, but we never hurt anyone, we take only what we need and leave them none the wiser.” I nodded and relaxed a little, it would have sucked to have to kill one of my old best friends when we had only just reunited. “I want to bring her back,” I blurted out. I couldn’t keep it in anymore. “Bring her back?” He asked. Dana explained, “we lost Esmeralda to that abomination you mentioned, Esmeralda is the vampire his dating, anyway, she was killed and Lucan made a deal with the spirit world that he has one year to find a way to bring her back, or she will be crossed over into the light. She’s stuck in purgatory while we find a way, and we need your help to find it.” He looked at us incredulous for a minute and then, shaking his head, muttered, “I’m going to need another drink for this,” and gulped down the remainder of his beer.
