Rose
“What is all that beeping?” I asked myself. My face and head were throbbing which had told me I, once again, received a beating, but I couldn’t remember what for. “Must have been bad enough for me not to remember what it was over.” I wish it would all just end. The beeping started to grow louder and I couldn't figure out why.
“Are you awake?” A male voice asked me, at first I panicked not knowing who it was until a hand grabbed mine sending tingles up my arm. Mate. A voice in the back of my head spoke, I ignored it thinking it was my self conscious.
I tried to pry my eyes open even though it sent a sharp pain through my head, I’ve felt worse. When I finally had my eyes opened just a crack the sunrise blinded me and that’s all it took for me to go into panic mode. I was late for my morning chores and breakfast. I sprung up in the bed I was in and instant regret followed immediately. Pain shot throughout my whole body and made me scream out against the pain.
“Hey, it’s okay. Where are you going?” Damien asked, his voice laced with concern. He started rubbing my arms and I felt my body start to relax. I cursed my body for what it was doing, my brain knew the beating I would receive for being late, one a normal wolf would call the worst beating of their life, for me it was a normal one for being late or messing up. Just as I was about to reply and get out of bed, a weird sensation ran over me and I fell back against the bed and my body started to shake violently.
“Hillman!!!!” Bellowed my mate. I couldn’t ignore the fear I heard in his voice. I wanted to reach my hand out and reassure him I’m okay but then pain radiated throughout all my muscles as they all began too locked up. The beeping increased so much, I thought the machine was going to break. “You’re okay baby, I’m right here. Someone call Jackson! Where the f**k is Hillman?!!” He yelled with authority just as the door swung open.
“I’m here. Flip her on her side and make sure she doesn’t choke! The medicine isn’t helping her seizures! Hopefully this will stop it.” As the doctor spoke I felt a cooling sensation run through my arm and my muscles began to slowly relax. “There we go. Put her back on her back now please. If her heart rate was to get any higher I’m afraid we could have lost her.” He spoke with sadness.
“She jolted awake and tried getting out of bed and once her eyes were open as much as she could manage she started seizing.” Damien spoke as his concern only grew. Out of nowhere the door burst open and the scent of pine trees and the ocean filled my nose and my body started to feel like it was on fire.
“What the hell happened?!” Jackson yelled as I heard footsteps run towards the other side of me and grab my hand, only increasing the fire that was spreading through my body.
“She had another seizure and it almost cost her her life. Now before you two get upset you need to know something. Her scans and x-rays showed more than just her dragon half, after running several tests on her blood and studying the scans more, I have discovered she is not a hybrid, she’s a tribrid. She is a wolf, a dragon, and a witch, I don’t know how that is even possible but it is. It increases my fear as she will be hunted for her powers.” The words coming out of the doctor's mouth would not register what I just heard. A tribrid? What the hell was even a hybrid?
“Who all knows about her?” The question came out in a deeper growl than I have ever heard and it made me want to shrink into myself and it came from Jackson.
“No one but me and you two and it has to remain that way if we want to keep her safe.” The doctor spoke with confidence in his voice.
“Thank you Dr. Hillman.” Damien spoke, I could feel the relief in his voice.
“One other thing, from what you told me about what happened before her seizure, she doesn’t know where she is. Her body knows it is safe but her brain does not. With her mates by her side 24/7 her wolf and dragon are awakening and she will shift soon and it’s causing a lot of stress one her. You need to prepare her.” Dr. Hillman said to them as he patted one's shoulder and just as I thought he was going to leave the room the footsteps stopped. “Rose, I know you are scared but you are bound for great things. Don’t let fear hold you back.” And with that he finished walking out of the room and shut the door behind him.
“Are you awake?” Both asked at the same time, gently squeezing my hands. And all I could do was nod my head. “You are safe here. No one will ever lay their hands on you again, you never have to live like that again!” I could feel Jackson’s anger run through me.
“You are not anywhere close to their territory, you’re not even in the same state. We have the biggest pack around, no one will cross our borders, you have our word.” Damien spoke with such truth that I truly felt safe for once. I started to open my eyes the best I could while I kept reminding myself that I was safe and nothing would happen to me. “Hi baby.” Damien said as my eyes opened. I realized they weren’t so swollen anymore.
“How long have I been out?” I asked my voice almost a whisper.
“6 hours my love.” Jackson said with a gentle tone.
“Then how have I healed so fast?” I asked glancing between the two of them. They both looked confused until they realized what I meant and anger took over. I started to shrink into myself and when they noticed they both instantly calmed.
“Oh no love we’re not mad at you. We are mad about how you have been treated.” He spoke as he smoothed my hair out, sending a calming fire through my head at the contact that made me relax. “To answer your question, being in our presence has woken your wolf and dragon, and we flooded the wolfsbane out so your natural healing has kicked in.” He continued to stroke my hair as he spoke.
“Do you remember what happened when you first woke up?” Damien aske with pure curiosity on his face.
“Yes, I remember the seizures, the pain, and I heard every word that was said during.” I shocked myself at how comfortable I was speaking to them. I have not been allowed to say more than 2 words.
“Did you know any of it?” Damien asked.
“No. I knew I was a wolf and that’s why I was given wolfsbane everyday, but the rest no. How can I be all 3?” I blurted out, panic clear in my voice.
“It could have only come from your parents' love.” Jackson answered.
“No, they were just wolves.” My voice was very soft as tears welled in my eyes remembering I would never see them again. Just as they were about to comfort me, a buzzing started in the back of my head and a pain shot throughout my whole body as a cracking sound filled the room along with my screams.
“She’s shifting! We need to get her to the clearing!” Damien yelled as he scooped me into his arms. And the door to my room flung open slamming against the wall.
“Get out of the way! Move!” Jackson yelled as gasps broke out around us as Damien ran through the halls. The cracking stopped but the pain stayed. I felt as if I was going to die a painful death. Once we stepped outside the air hit my body and it soothed the pain until my arm cracked and my bone started to change. Damien stopped and laid me on the cool grass.
“This will have to do, send a pack link for everyone to stay inside.” Damien barked at Jackson. “Rose don’t fight it, if you fight it it will only hurt more let it in.” His words gave me strength and I welcomed the pain and willed my bones to take shape into a wolf.
