He tried again to speak, but another croak was all that he could manage. Her eyes never left his. Did he really need to speak? If she was so all-knowing surely she would know what he had come to ask? He stared back into her eyes. She smiled suddenly, but her smile had no warmth and no mirth in it. Then she reached up, clutching a handful of the leaves she had just inscribed. She held them up towards him for a moment, then flung them forward. As they hit the flame they flared up and he instinctively put his hands up to shield his eyes from the dazzling brilliance.
