The great gates had been flung wide open and three men wearing olive wreaths and bearing standards, were bursting through them. Crowds of youths and children followed them in, running and jumping and leaping with excitement. Bladud felt a touch on his arm and found that Alcestis had joined him. She slipped her arm through his and, nestling her cheek against his chin, smiled at the evident pleasure of the crowds. ‘Who are the Truce Bearers? I didn’t know we were at war.’
