Sandy checked the number on his mobile before answering. He didn’t know it, but swiped to answer anyway.
‘Detective Sanderson?’ the woman asked.
‘Speaking.’
‘Detective Sanderson, my name is Julia Makepeace. Ebony’s mother.’
Sandy swallowed, then shook his head. ‘How may I help you, Mrs Makepeace?’
‘Ebony’s publisher has been in touch with me, and he is very eager to get hold of Ebony’s notebooks. I know she had a few. She planned her novels in them. Only she could understand the scribblings, but Mr Culley is thinking of publishing her last book posthumously, and he thought the notebooks might add some light into how she planned it. She’d emailed the draft to his office a couple of days before she was shot.’
