AcknowledgementsThis book emerged from both my research into Australian WWI literature, and the stories of my grandparents’ emigration from Europe to Port Adelaide in 1914. I’m very happy that Paul and Albertine decided to make Australia our home. The novel was nurtured and greatly improved by the tireless, insightful, generous and clever contributions of my supervisor Dr Martin French. I’m very glad that we were able to collaborate on my PhD project. The Staff of the School of Culture & Communication in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne, in particular the late and much-missed Jessica Rose, were also instrumental in seeing this book reach the light of day. I am also grateful for the early encouragement of Tony Birch and the keen editorial eye of Catherine Mann. Michelle
