CHAPTER 38The paramedics lifted the gurney where Ping was strapped and slid it in the back of the ambulance. Sam put his foot on the bumper, leaning into the rear entrance of the vehicle, when the paramedic standing nearby grabbed his arm and said, “I’m sorry, but we can’t allow passengers other than the patient. You’ll have to catch another ride to the hospital.” Sam glanced down at the man’s hand, then looked up to his face and said, “It’s okay if I come along.” The paramedic’s hand fell away, but, before Sam could get into the ambulance, Mara grabbed him by the arm. “I think it would be best if I go.
