Chapter 6 — The Unregistered One

1063 Words
The gates did not close behind her. They erased behind her. One moment Kaia was being dragged through blinding light— the next, there was no “behind” anymore. Only forward. Only the Court. Her body hit cold marble. Not rough like stone from her world—this was polished, too perfect, like reality had been sanded down until it obeyed a higher rule. Kaia gasped and pushed herself up. The air felt wrong. Not thin. Not heavy. Judging. She looked down at her hands. The glowing markings from the forest were gone. Completely. Like they had never existed. But the absence felt louder than the pain ever had. “What did you do to me…” she whispered. Her voice echoed once. Then returned wrong—slightly delayed, like even sound had to be approved here. Slowly, she looked up. And froze. She was inside the Moon Court. Not just a chamber. A vast circular hall suspended in the void, carved from floating rings of stone and light. Above her, tiers of balconies stretched endlessly upward, filled with silhouettes watching in absolute silence. Not talking. Not moving. Just observing her like a phenomenon. Kaia swallowed hard. “This is insane…” A low pulse rang through the space. Not a sound. A response. Every figure in the Court shifted at once. Kaia stepped back instinctively. A voice echoed from everywhere and nowhere. “Subject has arrived.” Her stomach tightened. “Stop calling me that!” she shouted. The echo returned instantly: “Behavior deviation confirmed.” Kaia’s breath caught. This place didn’t just watch her. It categorized her. A sudden chain of light dropped from above. Kaia stumbled back as it slammed into the floor where she had just been standing. Another followed. Then another. Each one landed with precision—not trying to kill her. Trying to measure her movement. Like she was being mapped. “What is this?!” A calm voice cut through the chamber. “Containment protocol.” Kaia spun toward it. At the far edge of the hall stood a tall figure in layered lunar robes. Unlike the armored one, this presence showed a face—cold, ageless, unreadable. Its eyes didn’t look at her like a person. They looked at her like a mistake being reviewed. Kaia clenched her fists. “I’m not a threat. I didn’t ask to be here!” A pause. Then the figure tilted its head slightly. “You were not asked.” Kaia froze. The words weren’t cruel. They were procedural. That somehow made them worse. The figure raised a hand. The floating chains tightened in the air around her—but didn’t touch her yet. “Kaia Ashwood,” it said. Kaia stiffened. “…How do you know my name?” A faint silence. Then— “You should not have one.” Her blood ran cold. “What does that mean?” The figure stepped forward slightly. “The world you originated from was issued a controlled identity.” Kaia blinked. “A controlled… identity?” A flicker of movement rippled through the Court above—like something was reacting. The figure continued. “You were assigned to a pack lineage to stabilize your existence until extraction.” Kaia’s throat went dry. “Assigned?” The word hit harder than anything before it. Like she wasn’t born. Like she was placed. Her chest tightened. “That’s not possible,” she whispered. “I have parents. I grew up. I—” Her voice stopped mid-sentence. Because suddenly— Nothing came. Not silence. Not suppression. Just… missing pieces. Her childhood felt like it was slipping sideways. The figure watched her closely. “Memory instability detected,” it said calmly. Kaia staggered back. “No… no, you’re doing something. You’re messing with my head!” “No external manipulation required,” the figure replied. “You are correcting yourself.” Kaia shook her head violently. “That doesn’t make sense!” A deeper sound echoed through the Court. Not the bell this time. Something older. Like a door turning inside reality. The robed figure turned slightly upward. And for the first time, its expression changed. Not fear. Concern. “That should not be activating yet…” Kaia followed its gaze. Above the highest tier of the Court— The empty throne from before. It was no longer empty. Something was forming on it. Not fully visible. Just presence. Pressure. Kaia’s breathing quickened. “What is that?” No answer. The entire Court had gone still. Even the chains in the air stopped moving. Then— A voice finally spoke from the throne. Soft. And devastatingly familiar. “Unregistered anomaly confirmed.” Kaia froze. That voice— Not Ryder. Not the shadow figure. Something else. Something that knew her too well. Her name was spoken again. Not as a question. As ownership. “Kaia.” The air shattered around her perception. And suddenly— She was no longer standing in the Court. She was standing in a memory that was not hers. A white chamber. A child crying. Hands reaching out— Then a seal being placed over something inside her chest. A voice saying: “Erase her from all known records.” Kaia gasped violently and snapped back to reality. She collapsed to her knees. “What… was that…” she whispered. The robed figure looked at her differently now. “Observation confirmed,” it said quietly. “You are not a lost subject.” A pause. “You are a deleted one.” Kaia’s breath stopped. Deleted. Not rejected. Not erased from a pack. Removed from existence records themselves. Her hands shook violently. “I don’t understand…” The throne above pulsed once. The entire Court responded. Every chain of light in the room suddenly pointed toward her. Not restraining her now. Identifying her. Marking her. The robed figure stepped back slightly. “Protocol shift initiated,” it said. Kaia looked up, terrified. “What protocol?” A long silence. Then— “Retrieval escalation.” The air cracked. And somewhere far beyond the Court— Ryder Blackthorne suddenly grabbed his chest. Because the bond inside him— The one he thought was broken— Had just rewritten itself. And this time… It wasn’t reaching for Kaia. It was being pulled toward the throne. END OF CHAPTER 6
