Chapter 20
I rushed through the door as the bell rang, plopping down in the desk next to Jamie. She gave me an excited look. ‘Well…What happened?”
I started to answer her, but Mrs. Simeon interrupted us. “Let’s get started with our quiz class.” To which everyone groaned. I looked at Jamie, raised my eyebrow and gave her a smart-assed grin.
“Oh. My. Goddess.” She hissed. “We need to talk after class.” She whispered so we wouldn’t get in trouble.
The bell rang and Jamie popped up and dragged me out the door into the hallway. “Spill!”
“Well, he was upset by Zander, so he took off. I followed him. We had a talk. Well, I guess it was more like I yelled, he listened.”
“And…” she was brimming with anticipation.
“And we ended up making out.”
“EEEEK” She squealed. “I knew he’d come around! I told you this sweater looked hot on you.”
“Yeah. You were right. Did anything happen with Zander after I left?”
“Yeah. He yelled at me and demanded to know if that was your mate. I told him that was your lab partner for Chemistry class. I don’t know if he bought it or not, though.” She said.
“Thank you. I’m sorry he yelled at you.” I really was. I just didn’t get Zander. He had to have a mate out there somewhere. I wished he would hurry up and find her.
“It’s ok. His bark is worse than his bite.” She shrugged.
We walked to our next class. I felt like I was floating. Scarlett was ecstatic that she had connected with Jax even though it was only for a few minutes. I was in a daze through the rest of school. My mind kept going back to those kisses and how it had made me feel. The flutters, the excitement, the feeling of connecting with my mate. The warmth I felt from his hands being on me. I couldn’t remember a happier feeling.
I walked down the school steps towards the parking lot, looking for Joey, but I couldn’t find him or smell his scent. Disappointed, stood by the car waiting for Jamie, since we had driven together.
“So that Nerd I knocked down the stairs is your mate, huh?” I spun around to see Zander walking towards me with a scowl. “He’s not a nerd!” I spat. “He’s a nice guy.”
“Ok, Right…Nice try, Laney.” Zander said sarcastically. “He’s a total nerd. You could have had me, been a Luna, but now what? You get to be mated to that loser who doesn’t even want you. When you could have this.” He motioned to himself.
I rolled my eyes. “Give it up Zander. You know how it works. The Goddess chose for me, your mate is out there looking for you.”
“What if I don’t want her because I want you…” Zander stepped closer to me. We were almost touching. I tried to step back, but I was now up against the car with nowhere to go. He grabbed a strand of my hair and wrapped it around his finger. He moved in closer to my neck, his warm breath on my skin. I put my hands in the middle of his chest and tried to push him back, but he was unmovable. Zander chuckled at my failed attempt and pushed forward, brushing his lips along my neck. I shuddered at the sensation. “Stop!” I exclaimed. Zander pulled away momentarily. He looked me up and down, like he knew what I looked like without my clothes on.
I was so uncomfortable. I stepped aside trying to walk away. Zander grabbed my wrist. I turned to slap him, but suddenly Joey was there. He let out a low growl, pulled back and punched Zander in the face. Zander staggered back in shock but quickly recovered. His iris turned dark. There was a deadly gaze in his eyes. Zander angrily lunged toward Joey, swiping his chest with his claws. Joey moved but Zander still managed to cut through his clothes and left wounds across his skin. Joey fell back onto the snow- covered asphalt. I screamed at the sight of blood but swooped in between the two of them.
“STOP IT, Zander! Leave him alone or I will NEVER talk to you again!” I growled at Zander. Zander was pulling his arm back to inflict more pain on Joey, then he stopped. His eyes changed back to their human color. “This guy isn’t worth the trouble.” He cruelly laughed and walked off.
I turned my attention to Joey who was trying to stand up. ‘Sit back down!” I said grabbing his upper arm. Joey shook his arm from my grasp. “I don’t need your help.” He growled. “I can take care of my own battles.” He said angrily.
“Zander would’ve killed you.”
“Yeah, but at least I would have died with dignity.” He said looking me in the eyes. “I’ve gotta go!” Joey stormed off.
“Wait!” I called after him, but Joey just kept walking. I didn’t know if I should follow him but thought I should give him some space.
Jamie showed up and was taken aback by the blood splattered snow outside the car. I told her what happened. “I’m going to kill Zander!” she exclaimed. “Is Joey ok?”
“I think so. He had mostly deep scratches, but they were starting to heal.” Jamie got behind the wheel and I sat in silence trying to figure out what had happened.
When we got back home Jamie told Aidan about what everything.
“That d**k!” He said. I could see Aidan was fuming.
“I stopped Zander and told him I’d never speak to him again if he touched Joey.” I said.
“Aw, Laney - you said that?!?” Aidan said. “Way to go…”
“What? I got Zander to stop. I was afraid he’d kill Joey.” I explained.
“You can’t do that! Oh wow. I’m going to go see Joey.” He grabbed his phone and left.
Jamie and I looked at each other, not understanding the problem.
