Chapter 16
It was Mid December. The Pack was getting ready for the Alpha and Luna Ceremony. Dad was stepping down and Aidan was taking over. The day of the ceremony there was a light dusting of snow. There was a gazebo in our back yard that would be where the ceremony was taking place. Edison lights were strung underneath the roof of it and there were red rose petals sprinkled across the yard.
Jamie had on a deep red velvet dress that hugged her tightly and flared slightly at the bottom with a long train. Over the top she had a white cloak with a hood. Red was the color of the Blood Moon Pack. Jamie looked amazing in it. Aidan had on a black dress pants, black shirt, and red tie. Dad had wanted him to wear a suit coat, but Aidan was being stubborn and said it didn’t go with his style, that he wanted to add his own touch to the Alpha ceremony, so dad gave in. In the end, Aidan even rolled his shirt sleeves up his forearms to show off his tattoos. Dad just rolled his eyes.
I was wearing a less formal red dress, it came to my knees, with long sleeves, an open back. I had a on a short hooded black faux fur shawl adorned with a diamond brooch. My mother was wearing a floor length red dressed that shimmered. All of the pack was expected to be there for the ceremony. As well as Alphas and families from all the allied packs.
Beta Trent conducted the ceremony. Mom and Dad said a few words about what an honor it had been to lead the pack, about how much every pack member meant to them. I couldn’t concentrate fully on what was being said. A familiar woman kept staring at me, but I could quite place her face. She had blondish hair with a hint of grey in it. She was wearing a dark blue sequined dress. Her face was not welcoming, her lips pulled taught. When I would make eye contact, she didn’t have the courtesy to look away like most people would, but kept her eyes trained on me, to the point I was very uncomfortable.
I returned my focus to the ceremony but could feel her gaze upon me. ‘Should we growl at her?’ Scarlett asked. ‘No! that wouldn’t be polite, especially during this ceremony.’ I told her.
There ceremony was now complete. Aidan was officially Alpha, and Jamie was Luna. The pack cheered and moved in to congratulate them. I stood beside my mother, observing the woman again, with Zander, realizing she was his mother. “Why Laney Prichard” She said as she approached us, “I can’t believe just how beautiful you’ve become. Sarah, you must be so proud of her.” Her tone seemed sickly sweet, her smile fake. My mom put her arm around me, giving me a squeeze. “She is so, so beautiful. I’m so proud of all my babies.” She said beaming with pride.
Zander stood behind his mother looking at me. As they walked off, he leaned in and whispered “You look like a sexy red riding hood in that dress. I’ll be your wolf any day.” I was too shocked to respond. He had some nerve!
