Chapter 22

902 Words
Chapter 22 It had been almost a month since the parking lot incident.  Joey had stopped showing up to school.  He wasn’t responding to my texts.  I stopped sitting at the popular table at school.  I was doing everything I could to avoid contact with Zander.  Jamie and I began sitting out in the courtyard during lunches.  Jamie and I were sitting in silence eating.  I had a lot on my mind.  “How you holding up?”  Jamie looked at me sympathetically.  “I’m ok.”  I tried to muster up my best smile, but I knew she’d see right through it. “I’m sorry, Hun.”  Jamie put her hand on my arm for a minute.  It went quiet again.  After a few minutes she cleared her throat. I could tell she was nervous.  “What?”  I asked with a raised eyebrow.  A funny smile crept across her face.  “Ok, Jamie, spill.  I can see you’re dying to tell me something.”  “I’m pregnant.” “WHAT?!?!?” I couldn’t believe it.  She sat there grinning from ear to ear.  “I just found out.  I haven’t seen Aidan to tell him, so you can’t say anything yet.”  “I’m so happy for you!”  I jumped up and hugged her.  “I’m going to be an Aunt!”    She teared up. “I can’t wait to be able to tell everyone.  I’m planning on telling Aidan as soon as I seen him tonight.  He’s been training and working out every day and coming back late.  I’ve been so tired because of the baby. I keep falling asleep before he gets home, and he’s gone before I get up.” “My mom is going to be ecstatic. We’re going to have to plan a shower, paint a room.  There’s so much to do.”  Werewolf pups are born after only 6 months.  So, it would fly by.  I was so excited for my friend and brother.  But I couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like to be that in love with your mate and have babies.  Deep sigh…I missed Joey.  I missed the couple of times we had shared a closeness together.  I thought about him every day.  My lips missed his.  I just wanted my mate.  **** After school I decided I would go to out for a run.  I went out to the woods.  I just wanted to run to get away from all those emotions.  As I approached the woods a sense of relief washed over me.  I needed to shift.  I needed to get my head clear.  I went behind a tree, took my clothes off and folded them, putting my phone on top of them.  I wasn’t planning on running for too long, just enough to feel better.  I concentrated on Scarlett.  Her voice was calm and soothing.  Soon we were running through the woods, jumping logs feeling the wind in our fur.  I felt so alive, so agile.  Somewhere in the darkness, twigs snap.  Scarlett’s ears pricked up.  She slowed up. ‘We should turn around.’ Scarlett began to head back when suddenly another wolf emerged from the woods.  For a split second, it was like my dream.  Was this Joey? We raised our nose and sniffed.  All of our hairs stood up on end.   A Rogue!  Scarlett ran faster than she ever had before, dodging trees, and jumping logs.  But the Rogue was too fast.  It was on our heels, biting at our hind legs.  I had no idea how we were going to get out of this.  I tried to mind link Joey, but because we didn’t have the mate bond, it didn’t work.  I tried to reach Aidan, when the Rogue pounced onto my back and sent me flying across the floor of the woods. I was sprawled out on the ground breathing hard.  Frantically, Scarlett was trying to get up. The Rogue was towering over us, foaming at the mouth and gnashing his teeth.  The growls were deafening.  We were on all fours, looking for a way out.  The Rogue was approaching us.  We were desperately trying to retreat into the woods, looking for a chance to escape.  Damnit!  We were backed up against a tree trunk. This was it, I had to lunge at the Rogue or stand there and die.  We were not going down without a fight.  We snarled back at the Rogue.  He was so close that I could see into the depths of his soulless red eyes.  I swiped at their snout and hit them on the face drawing blood.    The Rogue growled then bit me.  He was aiming for my neck, but I turned at the last minute, the bite landing on the side of my face.  He tried to shake me, I managed to flip the Rogue onto his back.  I jump forward to bite into his stomach but before I could a dark figure emerged from the trees. I felt a stab in my side, a sharp burning hot pain.  Then there was nothing.  Only darkness.
