Chapter 15
Crystal knocked on Joey’s door and opened it. “Hun, Aidan is here.”
Joey turned in his chair.
“Hey man, long time no see. Thought I’d swing by to see what’s up. You down for some gaming?” Aidan said throwing himself on Joey’s bed like he used to.
Joey seemed a little skeptical. “Sure.” He said shrugging.
They were playing and talking like they used to before Aidan left 2 years ago to train.
“I missed you at my party the other day. I was hoping to catch up with you there.” Aidan tried to sound casual.
“Is this about your sister?” Joey said as he paused his game. “Is that why you came here?”
“Dude, just came to see my friend.” Was all Aidan said.
Joey continued playing. After a few minutes of them trash talking each other’s gaming skills Joey got quiet. Aidan saw Joey eying his arms and tatts. “So, you really worked out while you were away, huh?”
“Yeah…I guess so. They worked us hard, the muscles were just part of it.” Aidan said without looking away from the screen.
“Uh…do you think you could help me do that? I mean, get some muscles and fighting skills?” This time Aidan paused the game and looked at Joey. “What kind of skills do you want?”
“Mostly to be able to hold my own in a fight. Right now, I’d just get my ass beat. Not really into dying.” Joey looked down.
“You think you’ll have to fight someone?” Aidan asked.
“Well, maybe. If I look the way I do right now, yes.” Joey said.
“Have anyone or 2 in mind?” Aidan asked nonchalantly.
“Mmmmm. Not really. You know…just in case someone is mad at me.” Joey said.
“Ok, then. Let’s work on this. We can start tomorrow after school. It will be slow, but once you turn 18 and shift for the 1st time, your body will be stronger and more receptive to training. You will get stronger faster, then you’ll really see things change.” Aidan said shaking his head up and down.
Joey smiled. “Awesome. But can you please not mention this to anyone?”
“You’ve got it, man.” Aidan said. They continued playing.

I was sitting in the kitchen at the island helping my mom and Jamie decorate sugar cookies for our Fall dinner. Every year we have a huge buffet in the pack house for the families if they choose to stop by. Jamie and Aidan had been gone for a few days so they could have alone time…which meant mate properly. I hadn’t seen Aidan since they had returned, I was dying to know if he had done what he had promised.
Aidan came bounding down the back stairs into the kitchen grinning widely, grabbed a cookie off the plate shoving it into his mouth. He walked past Jamie, pinching her butt as she sat on the stool and gave her a wink. Jamie beamed from ear to ear, Mom pretended she didn’t see it while I made a gagging face.
Mom got up and said she had to go get the containers for the cookies but warned Aidan to not eat any more. As soon as she walked out, I questioned Aidan.
“So, did you talk to him?”
“Who? Joey?” He asked with a smirk on his face. He moved behind Jamie giving her a hug around her shoulders, probably to protect himself in case I decided to hit him for being a smart ass.
“Yes! Of course, Joey!” I hissed. “Who else would I care about?”
“I dunno, Dad?” he smirked again. “Yes, I did.” He picked up another cookie and Jamie swatted at his hand.
“AND?” I pressed.
“And then he kicked my ass at Halo” He laughed. “But don’t worry, I got him back later.”
“C’mon, Aidan! I swear to Goddess, I’m going to hurt you. Well, what did he say?!”
“Can’t tell you…Bro code.”
“What?!” I said disappointed.
“You know, Bros before H—”
Jamie slammed her hand over his mouth before he could finish. “Nope. We don’t need that.” She said side eying him. She pulled her hand away as he grinned a mischievous smile. He pulled her in and gave her a kiss on the side of her head. “Ok.” He said. He walked over to me then put an arm around my shoulder.
“Don’t worry, sis. I got you.”
I smiled for a minute thinking how glad I was to have a brother like him. Until he pulled me into a head lock and started giving me a noogie.
“STOP!” I screamed. “You’re an ass.” I swatted wildly at his arm.
He laughed, let me go, grabbed another cookie, then ran out of the kitchen. I looked at Jamie. She had her elbow on the counter, her chin resting in her palm as she was watching him retreat. She sighed deeply. “Isn’t he just so cute?” She said dreamily.
I rolled my eyes. Some best friend she turned out to be. She looked back to me as I threw a napkin at her face. “Here. You’re drooling!”
She laughed and grabbed it.
Mom and Kyle came in with plastic containers and set them on the counter. Kyle tried to take a cookie but mom stopped him. “Just 1, Ok? I can see that your brother already took a few too many.” She sighed, but Instantly forgave Aidan. Life wasn’t fair. Aidan got everything his way.
