Chapter 7
I walked in the house, my eye still puffy. “Laney, what’s wrong?” My mom exclaimed when she saw me.
"I think I found my mate and he doesn’t like me.” I said starting to cry again.
“Oh baby” she put her arms around me and walked me to my room. I laid on top of my bed and she pulled a blanket off a chair and covered me up. Mom rubbed her hand over my hair and let me cry for a bit. Finally, she asked me to tell her what happened, and I told her it all.
“I know it seems bad right now, but that boy sounds like he’ll still come around in time. He sounds scared. Who is it?” she asked.
“Some nerd named Joey Evans.” I said angrily.
“What? Oh, that poor boy.” Mom shook her head.
“You know who he is? I’ve never seen him before yesterday.” I said.
Mom tisked. “Of course. I’m the Luna. I know everyone. Joey and his mom came back to our pack when he was 10 years old. His dad was a warrior for the Pacific Moon pack when it was decimated by rogues in a surprise ambush. His Dad was killed. Joey and his mother came back to this, her pack to live. They stayed in the pack house for a bit. Your brother and him were friends. I can’t believe you don’t remember him.”
I sat with a blank look on my face. He had been friends with my brother, Aidan?
Mom walked out and came back with a photo album. “Here,” she said showing me a pic of my brother and Joey dressed up like Star Wars characters. Joey is Luke Skywalker.” I vaguely remember Aidan being Darth Vader for Halloween. How had this guy lived right next door to me, played in my house with my brother and gone to school with me for over 8 years and I had never noticed him? Was I blind? No wonder why Mrs. Evan seemed to know me. I felt like an i***t.
I wish Aidan were here to ask. But he was away training.
“He was such a shy boy.” Mom said thinking back. “But very smart. I’m not surprised you would say he’s a nerd.” She chuckled softly “Joey loved to read and tell me about different facts he read. He was so cute though. Is he still cute now?”
I literally just stared at her. Cute? “Really, Mom?!” I said.
“What? I was just asking.” She said innocently.
“I don’t know. I guess so. He’s not hideous. He has nice eyes, but he wears glasses.” I sighed. “But he’s so skinny. A stiff breeze could knock him over. I mean as the Alpha’s daughter I’m expected to bring strength into the pack…Joey is not that.”
“Laney give them both time. Sometimes males don’t fill out until after they have shifted. Has Joey shifted yet?”
“No.” I said. “His mom said he turned 18 in a few weeks.”
“Oh, you met Crystal? Isn’t she so sweet?” my mom gushed.
“MOM! You’re getting sidetracked. Real problems here…” I said rolling my eyes.
“Sorry, Hun. Ok. So, don’t worry yet. You have a few weeks to get through and then things will be better. I’m sure once Joey has his 1st shift, you’ll see he won’t be able to resist you. Besides, you’re too pretty to reject.” She said smoothing my hair back and kissing the top of my head. “Now no more tears.”
She walked out. I felt better, but still couldn’t take the situation as lightly as my mom did. I just needed to figure out what to do next. Just then my little brother Kyle jumped into the doorway and yelled “Laney loves nerds, Laney loves nerds!” And chucked a box of Nerds candies at me. I jumped up and chased him down the hall to his bedroom. He was quick and got inside before I could grab him.
I growled through the door. “If I catch you, Kyle, I’m going to give you a wedgie so strong it will rip your cheeks in half! Now leave me alone!”
I walked away, satisfied that I had scared him. I went back and laid on my bed to thinking about the night…man, I thought, opening the box Kyle had thrown at me, strawberry nerds are delicious.
