Chapter 5

1060 Words
Chapter 5 I was distracted the rest of the day of school.  I had to know if this guy was really my mate. I jumped up as the final bell rang and headed outside the main door.  I stood to the side as the other students left.  My plan was to find him as he left and try to talk to him.  Teens streamed out the door but I didn’t see him anywhere.  Did I miss him somehow? I sat on the top step after the students stopped coming out and pondered what I was going to do next.  I heard one of the doors open and shut behind me.  I turned to look and saw it was Joey.  I jumped up ready to talk to him.  He saw me and froze.  “Hey Joey.  I was wondering...”  “Get away from me!”  He yelled. I was totally caught off guard. “What? I just want to talk!” “You hurt me.  Leave me alone!!”  He briskly walked away from me.  I followed and when he saw I was still behind him, he ran down the steps, his heavy backpack swaying back and forth and helping to slow him down.  Now he was speed walking down the sidewalk.  Little did he know, I was a speed walking champ.  I caught up to him.  “I just want to talk to you.”  I pleaded.  “No.” He yelled, and he ran crazily down the street.  Geez!  Talk about playing hard to get! I thought about chasing him, but that seemed a little desperate. Man, If I had been able to shift into my wolf, he wouldn’t have stood a chance.  But there was no way my 1st ever shift would take place here in the street.  He was quick for someone so small.  Joey’s reaction had me so confused.  Maybe he wasn’t my mate after all.  I had always heard that the mate pull was so strong, you knew, both of you.  But Joey didn’t seem to feel any pull towards me.  Wait?  Was he rejecting me?!  No one rejects me!  I’m the daughter of an Alpha!! I had to change tactics.  Maybe tomorrow I don’t chase him.  I’ll carefully follow him and try to figure out where he lives.  Like not in a creepy stalkerish way but like in a nice friendly cheerleader sort of way.  I needed to get this figured out.  The next day, I waited in my car and watched him walk down the street.  I circled the block a couple of times, Joey never noticed cause he was reading and walking at the same time and somehow managing to walk straight.  He turned down Maple St. and went into a white house with blue shutters.  Ok.  Now I knew where he lived and yes, I felt a little creepy doing that, but I HAD to talk with him.  So now what do I do??  Knock on the door?  Talk to his parents?  Demand he see me?  Oh my god?!  How could I be such a mess?!  I hadn’t even had a real conversation with this little guy and here I was being crazy! Great way to start off a relationship.  I parked my car one house over, so I wouldn’t look too eager, but close enough I could make a quick getaway if this didn’t go well.  I checked my hair in the rearview mirror and got out of the car.  I had a cute purple top on that showed just the perfect amount of cleavage…enough to be noticed, but left most guys wondering if they’d get to see more.  I was wearing comfy yoga pants, modest enough.  I made my way up to the door and knocked.  I stood there nervously staring at me feet.  Oh, goddess, I should’ve practiced what to say.  A very plain woman with glasses opened the door.  She had a warm smile.  “May I help you?”  She asked.  “Um, well Mrs. Evans, I was wondering if Joey was home?”  I looked down again.  “Oh…you are the girl?”  I looked up at her and she was grinning widely.  “The girl that shocked my Joey’s hand?  Laney Prichard?”  I nodded.  It was clear she knew who I was.   She squealed and grabbed me into a hug.  “I always knew you’d grow up to be so pretty!”  She let go and patted my face.  “Come in, come in.” and pulled me into the house. “Sit, please.”  As I entered the living room.  “I knew the moment he told me a girl at school had shocked his hand when he touched her that he’d found his mate, but he didn’t tell me it was you. But he is very scientific and doesn’t believe such a thing can happen.  He has been slow to mature and has a couple months before he turns 18.  I hope before then he starts to see some changes.”  She shook her head.  “It’s just been Joey and I for so long, I think not having a father has slowed this process down.  He has had no one to see how to shift and be a strong wolf…”  She trailed off and became so sad looking.  “Anyway, I am so excited that I got to see you again.  Her face lit up even more.  “My son is mated to the Alpha’s daughter?!”  I let her sit there and take it all in.  “I just wanted to come and say Hi since I haven’t been able to at school. And I wanted to meet you as well.” I said.  Although, it seemed like I had met her before. Mrs. Evans was so genuine and nice; I was glad I had chosen to stop by. “I probably should be going.”  I stood to go.  “Nonsense.  You can’t leave without seeing Joey. Here, I’ll show you to his room.”
