Chapter Fourteen: The Truth Beneath the Surface
The clinic was cold and quiet. Albert sat in the waiting room, staring at the floor as the nurse walked in with a sealed envelope.
"Mr. Grayson, the results are in."
His fingers trembled as he took the envelope. It felt heavier than paper should.
He didn’t open it there.
Instead, he drove.
Straight to Sweet Whiskers.

Kristian was sitting by the window, a steaming mug of chamomile tea in her hands, when she saw him through the glass. Her chest tightened.
He stepped inside, holding the envelope like it was a confession.
“I couldn’t open it without you,” he said quietly.
She nodded, setting her cup down. “Okay.”
Together, they sat at the counter. The envelope lay between them, daring them both.
Albert took a breath and tore it open.
He scanned the paper once. Twice.
Then slowly looked up.
“It’s not mine,” he said.
Kristian blinked. “What?”
“She lied,” Albert whispered. “I’m not the father.”
A mix of shock, relief, and anger rushed through her like a wave. “Why would she—?”
Just then, the door burst open.
Alexandra.
“Albert,” she said, breathless. “Wait, I can explain.”
Albert stood. “Don’t. The test says everything.”
“I was scared,” she said, voice cracking. “You left. You found someone else. I thought—if I could just keep you in my life—”
“By trapping me?” he said, his voice low, dangerous. “By lying about a child?”
“I thought I still loved you,” she cried. “But you’ve changed. You’re not the man I used to know.”
“No,” he said, stepping back. “I’m better. Because I found someone who made me better.”
His eyes found Kristian.
Kristian, who had stood quietly, listening, watching, weighing everything.
Alexandra looked at her. “You don’t belong in his world. You never did.”
Kristian stepped forward now, her voice calm but fierce. “Maybe I don’t. But I belong in his heart. And that’s the only world I care about.”
Albert moved beside her, taking her hand.
Alexandra’s expression hardened, and without another word, she turned and walked out—for good this time.

Later, as the sun dipped behind the city skyline, Albert and Kristian sat together again, fingers intertwined.
“I’m sorry you had to go through all this,” he said softly.
Kristian shook her head. “We both did. But sometimes, the truth clears the fog.”
He kissed her hand. “Does this mean... you’re staying?”
She smiled. “I never really left.”
And this time, there were no doubts.
Only the feeling that maybe—just maybe—love had won.
