34 || Love Lost

1198 Words
She laid her head against the steering wheel and let the silent night comfort her. What was she doing? What was she thinking? Maybe she should not have gone to see Logan. Perhaps it was time to let him go and try to work things out with her husband, hopefully it was not too late to save their marriage. She loved Logan. Perhaps not romantically, but still, she loved him; she was addicted to him in a way that made her choices seem unhealthy. She could not think of the times she spent obsessing over who he dated and whether they were good enough for him; she had done it to almost all the women he had dated. All but MJ Billings. Every time it came to her, it was as if her magical touch lost its powers. Logan did not want to hear anything about MJ, let it be good or bad; she did not understand whether it was from pain or discomfort, or perhaps because he still loved her. She still remembered how broken he was after MJ ran away from home without saying as much as a goodbye to him. He was lost and confused, and turned to anything in his reach for comfort. He went downhill and steered away from any path of righteousness. But she was there for him. She had always been there for him even though her feelings for him thwarted the day she lost her heart. Even after she married David, they were always there for each other and comforted one another in any way they could think of, whether it was through s*x, alcohol, movies, food, silent nights; they never discarded each other. However, her attachment to Logan ruined everything else she worked hard to build. Her career, her friendships, and her marriage. She found herself drifting further apart from her husband and family, and Sonya; and by the time she realised it, it was too late. She could smell divorce papers only a few weeks or months away, and a huge custody battle. She just lost her touch in life, and recently, she had not been such a good mother; more especially to her newborn baby who was only six-months old. If it were not for her mother-in-law, her children would surely suffer, more especially since her husband spent more time travelling. "I can't go on like this." She muttered. "I really need to stop this. I need to get myself together, take care of my daughters, my husband." She whispered. She remained in her car for almost two hours before she decided to get inside the house. It was late at night and everyone was obviously sleeping; all the lights were out and most of the guests had left the house to her father-in-law's. Hopefully, they all stayed there. She unlocked the front door and entered the house, closing the door as quietly as she had opened it in the first place. She had taken off her heels in the car, thus making it easier for her to tiptoe into the house, but not even that could save her from the impending doom. She was about to silently bolt to her bedroom, when the light in the sitting room flickered on, and her husband's drunk figure stood blocking her path. She gasped and dropped her shoes and purse, along with her keys. "David." She breathed and took a step back, eyeing the door from her peripheral vision. "I wasn't expecting you to come back tonight." She bit her tongue when she realised what she had implied, the look on his face said it all; there was a dangerous glint in his eyes aside from the red of alcohol, he looked angry and hurt. "Where do you come from, Lola?" He asked loudly, not caring that there were people sleeping. Lola threw him a panicked look. "Honey, please keep your voice down, the children–" "You should have thought about that before you went to w***e yourself out!" He yelled, staggering towards her, but she quickly stepped back. "You are a mother of three beautiful girls, Lola. You have a little baby barely seven months old, but you don't even care!" Tears rolled down his eyes, and Lola's heart clenched in despair. Had she hurt him that much? David was never really the father of year, and he never cried; the last time she had seen him cry was when Shannon damaged his sports car. "I know you haven't had it easy, you have a heart condition that's keeping you at bay, and you live in fear; but this is not the way to go about it." David spoke quietly as if he had suddenly regained his conscience. "I've been trying, Lola. I tried to be there for you, but you pushed me away; and then I kept my distance thinking it would help, but you are getting worse by the day, and I can't ignore this any longer." He shook his head. "I know and–" "Don't. Please, just don't, okay?" He said, swatting his tears away with his dirty sleeve. "I love you, Lola, and I miss you." He reached out to touch her, but she stepped back again. David dropped his hand and sighed, pinching his nose. "But maybe it is time we went our separate ways." Lola stared at him with wide eyes welled up with tears and her hand shot up to her chest to numb the pain she felt. It was as if there were shutters of glasses piercing from within her heart, and breathing became harder with every breath she took. She began to beat her chest furiously and hyperventilated. David stood there and stared with many thoughts racing his mind. This was Lola's third heart since she was born; she had her first transplant a few years after highschool, and then she had her second heart recently after the birth of their second child. It was very difficult to get the second heart and the situation was not promising; he nearly had a heart attack himself when he thought she was going to die – he could not imagine himself going through that pain again. Lola staggered back, and David made a move to help her, but she stopped him through a broken sob. "Don't touch me. This is what you wanted!" She cried. "No, baby, I'm sorry, okay? I'm sure we can work things out; I know we will get through this together." He said desperately, his heart twisting in his chest. "You don't love me." She said, and his heart dropped to his stomach. She picked up her purse and keys, and fumbled with the keys as she tried to unlock the door. "Lola, where are you going? You know you can't drive in the state you are in right now!" David shouted as she stormed out to her car, ignoring his pleas. "Lola!" "What is going on here? What's with all die raas?" His mother asked as she stepped out in her gown, but Lola was long gone. "David?" She squeezed his shoulder as he stood outside the gate with his hands on his hips.
