Chapter II

658 Words
I take off on a light jog and head towards the fields. We have a separate field for dairy and cattle and Dixie's main job is to wake them all up and take them to a different pasture to graze just to rotate them. She was pretty good with keeping them from mingling but every once in awhile when she got annoyed with me she would act out and mess something up.          Other pack members are starting to wake up and come out of their cabins, heading out to day jobs or helping out around pack lands. Checking the border and helping with the crops or animals. We sold our extra crops and beef to humans around the neighboring mountains. They don't know about us but they do know that we've always been on the mountain for generations.     I take in a deep breath and look around me. I need to savor the little things. Even if Leto won't tell me what's going to happen, I can feel it in my soul that it's only a matter of time. We start moving fresh hay and feed into the center of the field for the animals, making sure that they have access to the nearby pond for fresh water.     "Can you believe we turn 18 this weekend? Mom keeps talking about sending us to the nearby packs to see if one of their she wolves is our mate." Bennett is shaking his head smiling, for werewolves if you are identical twins then you will commonly share a mate, at least for males.      We don't know why but its always been this way. They had resigned themselves to this and were comfortable at the thought. Leto stirs in my mind and it distracts me from the boys talking about what they hoped their mate looked like. I roll my eyes at them and smile.     "What's wrong Leto? You're usually never this restless." I can sense that she's feeling uneasy which is very unusual because she's a very confident wolf.     She shakes her head and huffs. "It's going to happen soon, you need to stay on your feet and keep an open mind."     I frown and stop moving the hay bales. "I've been training with the warriors almost every morning, and I've already made peace with the fact that my mate won't be ideal. I honestly haven't even thought much about what my mate would be like, even before the dream. We'll be fine."     I must have had a blank look on my face because the twins stopped working and are staring at me with a worried face. I don't even notice that they moved to my side until Waylon talks.     "What are you daydreaming about?" Waylon taps my forehead and laughs when I scowl at him.     "Nothing, I'm just thinking about things, Leto wanted to chat a minute." I shrug and start to head towards the fence but something stops me. I look up into the sky and see the sun is just starting to peak over the next mountain.      I look into the woods behind us and something doesn't feel right. I shift slightly to let my eyes adjust to the darkness and I swear I see eyes staring back at me.         I'm just about to start walking forward when I get mindlinked by my dad.     "Di, boys, you need to come to the pack house, we're having an emergency meeting."     We all looked at each other and I whistled for Dixie to go home, then we started jogging to the pack house.      "What do you think this is about?" Waylon asks. I take one final glance at the woods and shrug.     "Don't know, maybe the humans need our help with something or we have new pack members." My answer seems to satisfy the boys but I know in my heart its something more.
