The maid stood up and walked over to the fireplace at the other end of the living room and investigated the fire. “You see dear after your grandma hit your mother’s head she had no memory of the events that had happened within those days. Although, even when that happened she always seems to smile a little bit, it was more of a smirk really, when something died or when there was news about a murder.” she turned to look at the young girl and sighed deeply. “would you still like me to go on? or would you rather me get you something to eat before I start again.” she looked at the young 15-year-old girl “after all you must be famished after not eating for a few hours” she added.
The girl looked up at the old maid and answered with a kind generous smile “Yes I would, thank you very much miss” then the maid hurried to the kitchen, leaving the girl alone in the little home down the hill. She got up and started pacing the length of the room, trying to contemplate the story that she had just been told so far.” I so do wonder why my mother would still have murderous thoughts even when she never did remember what she did that night?” she mumbled to herself” Why even think about doing something so awful to someone…” she decided that maybe it wasn’t her place to ponder such repugnant things.
Twenty minutes past and the maid were still not back from the kitchen. The young girl decided to go and check on her but when she walked into the kitchen the maid was gone and nowhere to be found. She found this odd and it gave her a malaise feeling down in her stomach. She then thought that maybe the maid had gone to bed instead and walked down the hall to the old maid’s room and sure enough she was there, but not asleep. she was… staring out the window looking kind of pale. The young girl decided to go see if the maid was alright.
“Ma’am? Are you alright?” she tapped on the maid’s shoulder and asked again “Are you okay?” and still she got no reply.
A few moments passed, and the maid finally replied with a “Yes, miss I’m alright” and weakly smiled. But the young girl wasn’t very convinced.
The maid went back to the kitchen and started cooking a dinner. The dinner consisted of roasted Turkey, pheasant, boiled eggs, carrots, peas, corn and Apple cider. After they ate the maid asked, ” would you like to hear more of the story, miss?”
She looked up at the old maid and answered, “Yes I would Ma’am, but shouldn’t we go into the main room before you start telling it again?”
The maid shook her head and replied “Well, I guess your right miss.” and they put the dishes away and walked to the main room to finish the story of the girl’s murderous parents. The young girl sat down by the fireplace to hear the rest of the story, although, the maid remained standing.
...
After Sarah’s bath she headed up to her room and laid in bed for a few minutes recalling the conversation her and Sir Damon had.
She couldn’t help but be excited for their little game
and she wanted to start it now, but that was the problem. She didn’t know how to even start. This will require a lot of planning. Then soon she fell asleep and dreamt strange and wonderful dreams.
The next morning, she thought of a plan and was gathering everything that would be needed. She was also looking for Damon before they would be called into breakfast to tell him about her plan she had come up with for the delightful game they were going to play, but he was nowhere to be found.
“Miss Sarah, it’s time for breakfast” the maid said. So, Sarah decided to go to breakfast, surely, he’d be there, and they can small talk until they are alone but when she walked into the dining area he was nowhere to be seen. Sarah thought this was odd but sat down anyway so things didn’t seem too suspicious to her mother and the servants.
“Good morning, my darling, I pray you slept nicely?” a man’s voice said in a whisper from behind her. She turned to see and there he was.
“I did, very nicely my beloved.” she replied in a mischievous voice then kissed him gently on the cheek and he sat down next to her.
Today’s breakfast consisted of eggs, bread, strawberry Custer, ham and a small delicate salad with water, milk or wine for a beverage. Generally, a nice healthy breakfast for this house but something felt off, like something wasn’t right about this. Sarah considered all possibilities and leaned over toward Damon and asked, “Did you help cook today’s breakfast?”
He replied with “Yes,” then whispered “but I don’t recommend you eating it my love” then he winked, and she knew that he had already begun the game.
