Derek sat in the backseat of the car, his fingers tapping lightly against the edge of his phone. The recording he’d just made was safely stored, but his mind was far from calm. He replayed the conversation he’d overheard between Sebastian and the woman—Annabelle’s old classmate. The way they’d laughed, the way they’d talked about Annabelle like she was some pawn in their twisted game. It made his blood boil. “Where to, sir?” the driver asked, glancing at Derek through the rearview mirror. Derek hesitated. He couldn’t go home yet. Not with all this swirling in his head. He needed to think, to plan. “Just drive around for a bit,” he said finally. “I need some air.” The car rolled forward, and Derek stared out the window, the city passing by in a blur of lights and shadows. His mind raced.
