Chapter Forty-Four

“Annabelle,” a voice called out, pulling her from her thoughts. She turned, surprised, because it wasn’t Flavia’s voice. Standing there was a girl she didn’t recognize, her expression soft and friendly, a stark contrast to the usual hostility or fake politeness Annabelle had grown accustomed to. “Do you mind if we go out together after school? I’d like us to go see a movie together,” the girl said, her tone light and hopeful. Annabelle blinked, caught off guard. “Excuse me, I’m not really following. Who are you?” she asked, her voice cautious but not unkind. She was used to people either hating her or trying to get close to her because of her newfound reputation at school. But this girl seemed different—genuine, almost innocent. The girl smiled warmly, unfazed by Annabelle’s hesitation.
