Cold Ice, Hot Blood

The tension inside the arena was thick enough to cut with a skate blade. It was the championship game: New York versus Boston. On paper, it was supposed to be a friendly exhibition. In reality, there was absolutely nothing friendly about it. The historic bad blood between the two cities had bled right onto the ice. The stadium was packed to the rafters, split down the middle by a sea of contrasting colours. On one side, the New York faithful waved massive banners, their faces painted in the Wolves’ signature blue and white. They cheered endlessly, a deafening wall of sound. On the other side, the Boston contingent countered with a relentless, booming rendition of their team anthem, determined to prove they were the victors even if the scoreboard didn’t know it yet. Up in the press box, the commentators were practically shouting over the roar of the crowd, their voices laced with anxiety. Down below, the media had cameras stationed at every conceivable angle, making sure not a single hit, turnover, or facial expression went uncaptured. Outside, the streets were a circus of reporters interviewing fans. Some were nervously chewing their nails; others were cocky, bragging about the massive bets they’d placed on the game. For those who couldn't score a ticket, the city was their stadium. Packed living rooms across the boroughs were glued to the screen, armed with popcorn and drinks. Even in Times Square, the massive billboards broadcasted the live feed, forcing commuters and street vendors to freeze in their tracks, while others huddled around radios, hanging onto every word. Hockey wasn’t just a sport in New York; it was a religion, and tonight, everyone had something on the line. After a high-energy opening ceremony featuring a performance by Shakira, the lights flared, the whistle blew, and the puck dropped. The crowd erupted as the Wolves took control, skating hard and passing with precision, desperate to keep the puck away from Boston’s aggressive defense. Ace took his position at center, flanked by Billy Mangrove on the left wing and Jake Thornton the team’s top scorer on the right. Holding down the blue line were Kenny Lee and Liam Hemsworth, a terrifying defensive duo. And anchoring them all in the crease was Max Donovan, the starting goalie who refused to let anything past his net. Looking at that line up, the fans were convinced they were unstoppable. Sunshine Apartments Back in the apartment, Leah was practically glued to the couch, a handful of popcorn frozen halfway to her mouth. Her eyes were locked on the TV; she wasn't missing a single second of this. Bored out of her mind in her bedroom, Elena finally wandered out and took a seat next to her. "You are deeply invested in this, aren't you?" "Oh, absolutely," Leah replied, never breaking eye contact with the screen as she finally crunched down on the popcorn. "When I get to medical school tomorrow, I’m going to ruthlessly mock my Bostonian classmates." "Well, I’m officially bored enough to see what the hype is about. Pass the popcorn," Elena said, reaching out. Leah handed over the bowl, and Elena helped herself to a handful. The game was growing increasingly brutal. The Boston team was relentless, refusing to give an inch, and the mounting tension in the room was palpable. Before she knew it, Elena found herself leaning forward, suddenly shouting at the screen right along with Leah. "Cool! Look at you learning," Leah teased, admiring her roommate's sudden burst of passion. "I can't help it! They’re playing so dirty, it’s infuriating!" Elena protested, her eyes glued to a chaotic scramble near the boards. "Welcome to being a hockey fan. The stress is part of the package," Leah laughed. On screen, Kenny tried to slide a pass across the ice to Billy, but a Boston defenseman anticipated the move, intercepting the puck and breaking away. The arena went wild with boos. "Oh my God! Did you see that?!" Elena gasped, jumping up. "I did! The nerve of these guys!" Leah yelled. "They might be from Boston, Leah, but we're going to show them exactly how New York handles business!" Elena said, tapping her chest fiercely. The Stadium Meanwhile, Shelby and her friends were just arriving at the arena. They were running late, but thanks to their VIP passes, they bypassed the massive, frustrated queues outside and glided straight toward the premium entrance. Shelby had made sure all eyes would be on her tonight. Her outfit was an eye catching, high fashion nod to the team, paired with flawless makeup in the Wolves' colors. "Alright girls, let's get this game over with," she said, adjusting her jacket as she turned to Zara and Ava. "I bet a certain someone is going to be very shocked to see you here," Zara whispered with a smirk. Shelby snapped her head around. "Shut up, Zara. I don't want to think about that right now." "I mean... she’s not wrong," Ava chimed in gently. "Both of you, drop it," Shelby warned, her voice dropping an octave. "I don't want to hear another word. Now, let’s move." As Shelby strutted ahead, Zara silently mimicked her behind her back, causing Ava to muffle a laugh before rushing to keep up. They reached the VIP checkpoint, where a burly, stern-faced bouncer was meticulously checking credentials. "Passes, please," he rumbled. Shelby confidently flashed her VIP pass, and the other two quickly followed suit. "Here they are. Can we go in now?" Shelby asked, her tone dripping with impatience. The bouncer scanned them and stepped aside. "You're good to go." Before heading to their seats, Ava and Zara stopped at a premium concession stand. "Please, Shelby, can we get some popcorn and milkshakes? It's part of the experience!" Ava pleaded. Shelby rolled her eyes. "I literally just got you two losers into the VIP section, and you want stadium food? No. We are not doing that." "I'll pay for it!" Zara offered quickly. "You won't have to spend a dime." "Still a no. Come on, move. You're embarrassing me," Shelby muttered, spinning on her heel and walking away. Left with no choice, her friends sighed and followed empty-handed. They took their seats in the front row of the VIP section, giving them an unobstructed, crystal clear view of the ice. Out on the rink, during a brief stoppage, Jake’s eyes scanned the crowd. He froze when he spotted Shelby. He didn't say a word, nor did he wave; he simply exchanged a long, heavy glance with her before turning his focus back to the game. By the time the horn blared for halftime, neither team had managed to score. The game was a grueling, scoreless defensive battle. Sweaty and exhausted, the players obeyed the referee's whistle, skating off the ice and waving to their roaring fans as they disappeared down the tunnel into the locker room. Inside the locker room, the atmosphere was heavy. The Wolves were feeling the physical toll of Boston’s brutal playing style, but giving up wasn't an option. "Alright boys, you fought hard out there. Take a breath, rehydrate, and let's fix this," Coach Jim announced as he walked into the room. The players threw off their gloves. Some slouched onto the benches, while others ripped off their helmets, dripping with sweat, reaching for sports drinks. "Coach, those guys are reading us like a book. It’s like they already know our playbook," Ace complained, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. "Yeah, I agree," Kenny added, grabbing a towel. "Every time I tried to feed the puck to Billy, they were already clogging the passing lane." "I think we need to change our formation, Coach," Jake suggested, looking around the room. Max snapped his head up. "Are you crazy? How are we supposed to switch formations and master it in a thirty minute halftime?" "Hey, it was just a suggestion, dude," Jake snapped back, his temper flaring. "Knock it off!" Ace barked, shutting them both down. The room fell silent, though Jake and Max continued to glare at each other. Ace turned back to the coach. "Coach... is there anything we can do to throw them off? If we keep playing the way we did in the first half, they’re going to break through our defense eventually." Coach Jim stood in silence for a moment, stroking his chin. "I’ve been charting their movements. I have an idea. Gather around." The team leaned in, putting their heads together as the coach quickly sketched out a new tactical approach on the whiteboard. As the buzzer sounded signaling the end of halftime, the boys began to stand up and gear back up. Jake caught Ace by the shoulder, pulling him into a quiet corner of the locker room. "Hey, can we talk?" Jake asked quietly. "Can it wait till after the game?" Ace replied, his mind already back on the ice. "No, it'll be quick, I promise," Jake insisted. Ace nodded, listening. "She's here. I saw her in the front row of the VIP section." Ace’s brow furrowed. "What? What is she doing here?" "I don't know," Jake admitted. Ace shook it off, slapping Jake’s shoulder pads. "Doesn't matter right now. We deal with that later. Right now, we focus on the game. Let's go!" A few minutes later, the Wolves skated back onto the ice, determined to finish what they started. Back in the apartment, Elena and Leah were locked and loaded for the second half. During the intermission, they had made a mad dash to the kitchen to refill their popcorn and blend a fresh batch of smoothies. The puck dropped, and the Wolves immediately executed Coach Jim’s new strategy. The sudden shift completely blindsided the Boston defense. Within forty seconds, Ace drove deep into the zone and executed a flawless, blind pass to Jake, who slammed the puck into the back of the net. Goal! The stadium erupted. Over in Times Square, the crowd of spectators went wild, screaming in unison. In the apartment, Elena and Leah shrieked, jumping up and down on the couch. Through the walls, they could hear their neighbors screaming too the entire apartment complex was celebrating. Boston tried to fight back, but the Wolves weren't done. With only a minute left on the clock, Ace intercepted a sloppy pass, broke away from the defense, and slipped the puck right between the Boston goalie's pads. The final buzzer sounded. Two to zero. A shutout victory for New York. "Oh my God, Leah! We won! We actually won!" Elena cheered, jumping around the living room. "I told you! Jake and Ace always have it covered," Leah beamed, feeling vindicated. Elena looked back at the screen just as the camera zoomed in on Ace. He was doing a hilarious victory dance on the ice, surrounded by his laughing teammates, soaking in the adulation of the fans. Elena watched him for a moment, a small smile tugging at her lips. "I guess... he really is as talented as they say."
