It had been three days since the Watsons, the owners of the local bakery, vanished into thin air. The police were stumped, and the town was buzzing with rumors. Telly's investigation had led him to this shop, where the owner, Mr. Jenkins, had reportedly argued with the Watsons just days before their disappearance. But as Telly searched the shop, he couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched. Suddenly, he heard a faint whispering in his ear. "Stop looking, Telly. Just stop." The voice was soft and raspy, and it sent shivers down Telly's spine. He spun around, but there was no one there. The whisper seemed to come from all around him, echoing off the walls. Telly stepped out of the crisp morning air and into the warm, inviting atmosphere of the local diner. The smell of freshly brewed coffee and sizzling bacon filled his nostrils, momentarily distracting him from his mission. "Hey, Telly! The usual?" the waitress, a friendly woman named Darla, asked as he slid onto a stool at the counter. Telly nodded, and Darla began pouring him a cup of coffee. "You know, I've been meaning to ask you, Darla... have you heard anything about the people who've gone missing?" Darla's expression turned serious, and she leaned in close. "I don't know what you're talking about, Telly," she said quietly, glancing around the diner nervously. Telly raised an eyebrow. "Come on, Darla. I've heard rumors. People are talking." Darla sighed and wiped her hands on her apron. "Okay, fine. But you have to promise not to tell anyone I said anything." Telly held up his hands. "I promise." Darla glanced around the diner again, then leaned in closer. "There's talk about the Brotherhood of the Rail," she whispered. "Some folks say they're behind the disappearances." Telly's eyes narrowed. "What do you know about the Brotherhood?" Darla shook her head. "Not much. Just that they're some kind of secret society. But I do know that they've been seen around town, always wearing those black suits and sunglasses." Telly's mind was racing. He had heard rumors about the Order, but he had never been able to find any concrete evidence. As he finished his coffee and prepared to leave, Telly asked Darla one more question. "Do you know anyone who might be willing to talk more about the Brotherhood?" Darla hesitated, then nodded. "There's a guy who comes in here sometimes. He's a bit of a loner, but he might know something. His name is Jake."Telly's eyes lit up. "Thanks, Darla. I owe you one." As he left the diner, Telly couldn't help but feel that he was getting closer to the truth. He just hoped that he wouldn't become the next person to disappear. Chapter 6: The Hunt for Jake October. Telly spent the rest of the day searching for Jake, asking around town and showing his face in all the local haunts. It wasn't until he stumbled into a seedy bar on the outskirts of town that he finally got a lead. The bartender, a gruff-looking man with a thick beard, nodded at Telly's description of Jake. "Yeah, I know the guy. He's a regular here. Comes in every night around midnight." Telly thanked the bartender and left, deciding to come back later and catch Jake off guard. As he walked back to his car, he noticed a black sedan following him. He quickened his pace, but the sedan kept pace with him, its tinted windows reflecting the streetlights like mirrors. Telly's heart was racing as he turned down a dark alley, hoping to lose the sedan. But as he emerged from the alley, he was confronted by three men in black suits, their faces expressionless. "Evening, Telly," one of them said, his voice dripping with menace. "We've been watching you. We know you're asking questions about the Brotherhood of the Rail." Telly tried to stand his ground, but the men closed in around him, their eyes glinting in the dim light. "Let me make one thing clear," the same man said, his voice rising. "You need to stop asking questions. You need to stop poking your nose into things that don't concern you. Or else." Telly felt a surge of fear as the men closed in, their fists clenched. He tried to defend himself, but he was outnumbered and outmatched. Just as the men were about to deliver the final blow, a loud whistle pierced the air, and the men froze, looking around nervously. Telly took advantage of the distraction to make a run for it, sprinting down the alley as fast as he could. He didn't stop until he was back in his car, speeding away from the scene. As he caught his breath, Telly realized that the men had left him with a parting gift - a note on his windshield with a single sentence: "Darla is now amongst the missing. Back off, Telly." Telly's heart sank as he read the note. He had been so caught up in his own investigation that he had forgotten about Darla's warning. Now, it seemed, she had paid the price for talking to him. Telly's determination hardened into a cold, hard resolve. He was going to find out what had happened to Darla, and he was going to bring the Brotherhood of the Rail to justice, no matter what it took. Telly thought, Who was the man controlling them, his voice was oddly familiar but rustic almost to low a tone , yet enough to command attention....he should've looked to see if he could've seen his face...... Too late he thought.
