I looked at Derek, and I froze. "What does he mean when he said he was going to turn me?" My mind raced as I looked at him, not sure what I wanted. Yes, I could be invisible and powerful, but then, how do I curb the insatiable bloodlust? The thirst, the hunger. How do I make it all stop without killing the innocent?
I lifted my gaze, and it met his. "I can read your mind; your thoughts are loud, but come to think of it, This is a gift, Dianne." Derek said slowly walking away from me. "Have you ever wondered what happens after you turn?" He sat down on the old table in. front of me and stared at me. "Have you ever wondered? No more falling sick; your body is immune to sickness, and you are stronger with heightened senses and immortality. Don't you want that?"
"So what happens to me when I am turned?" I asked a little scared. "You become one of us. You become like me," Derek replied. "What about Irene?" I asked with a shaky breath. "Does that mean she will be off my back for good?"
"Irene is a b***h, and she won't stop bitching out. All you need to do is leave her to me." Derek replied.
"But I am already caught in the crossfire. Do you think she is going to leave me alone because you said so? Haven't you noticed? Even Amanda and her friends see me as a weakling, and they would keep bullying me, especially since you have given Amanda your gift."
"Diane, listen to me. I know how all of this is for you, but then all you need to do is have the bite and become like me. Like us, you won't have to be sacred anymore. I will make sure of that." Derek pleaded. The thought of becoming a vampire was tempting; I won't have to be scared anymore and won't have to run from Amanda and her friends. I would be able to stand my ground and face them head-on. "So, let's say I agree to this. Is there any aftermath of me becoming like you?"
"You mean, are there hunters?" Derek raised his eyebrows to look at me. " Hunters? Are you kidding me right now?" I looked at him. I was clearly losing my mind. "What are you saying, Derek? Are you telling me some people are after vampires? How many hunters are there?" I looked at him.
Derek sighed, "You need to listen to me. The hunters are as old as vampires, and they won't stop till they see all of us back dead in our coven. I have been able to hide out of plain sight this long, so I don't see any reason why we cannot do that. Irene is going to leave eventually."
"And what if she doesn't? You said so yourself. She is here for you and me. I am just a roadblock. What do you think she would eventually do when she knows you turned me?" I asked
"You are taking this too far, Dianne." Derek rubbed his temple. "Should we leave?" he said slowly.
"We can run. Go anywhere of your choosing and never come back."
"Run? How many years did you run away from your coven? Do you think simply running would make the problem go away?" I stand up, walking towards him. "Then what do you want me to do? I can't always be there to protect you like you said." Derek replied.
"So, what does it feel like?" I asked him, looking at him from the corner of my eyes. "You mean being a vampire?" Derek asked
"Yes, do you even eat aside from the drink of human blood?" I asked. Derek smiled and looked outside the window. "It is getting late, Dianne. Why don't you have some rest? We can talk about this tomorrow when you are awake."
I yawned lazily and went into the cozy bed in front of me. As my eyelid felt heavy, I watched Derek walk to my side and sit down beside me. I held his hand and looked at him. "Don't leave me." I whispered.
"I am here, Dianne. I am not going anywhere." Derek replied and watched me fall asleep.
[ NEXT DAY ]
The chirping sound of the birds woke me up. I opened my eyes slowly to see that Derek was not by my side. I looked around, and the smell of coffee filled the room. Derek walked in with a tray of a teacup and a piece of toast.. I smiled, "How did you manage?" I looked around.
We were not even in his home. The place was shabbily looking and unkempt. Derek smiled as he sat down; he looked into my eyes, and he brushed a strand of hair out of place back to its normal place on my forehead. "I come here to think. You are the first person that knows this place." He said with a smile.
"Really?" I looked at him as I sipped the hot cup of coffee in my hand. He nodded and got up. "Eat fast. We are going to be late for school." Derek looked at me and I groaned. "Do we have to? Can't we just skip today?" I said with a cocky voice.
"Hmm... I have been meaning to ask you." Derek's gaze suddenly becomes serious. "What is it?" I asked with a mouthful of toasted bread in it.
"What about your parents? Are they not in town?" He looked at me. "That is a long story, Derek. I am going to tell you all about that, but not now." I replied with a playful smile.
The truth was that I didn't care about them. They were living their life elsewhere, and I was here trying to make the best of my life. "Why don't we skip just today?" Derek said with a wide grin.
